Mac's don't suck. And guns don't kill people. People kill people. Therefore Mac users kill people and suck.

Actually, I don't dislike Macs but the whole fudging idea that I own a Mac and therefore:

    I'm helping the environment
    I'm hip
I'm smarter than a PC user
I can't possibly ever have the machine crash
    Everything works perfectly
Apples not an evil empire like Microsoft! (actually, they are as evil just not as big)

I remember when our art department got Macs after having PC's. The manager said that "Mac never crash", "Applications never shutdown" and she convinced management to get them. Now, I'll agree that the Macs were a better choice for the art department but saying they never...

Needless to say, after the first six months of hell with the corel applications which sucked equally as bad on the Mac and PC, she didn't seem to recall that they never crash...

    Re: Mac's SUCK!!!

I've used macs extensively professionally (as a graphic designer) and personally (had a couple of macbooks)...

    a) macs crash. And when they do OMG do they crash.

    b) macs do have viruses. Just not as prevalent as pc's

    c) the myth that they are better for graphic design is just that. A myth. They don't have better graphics than a pc... the same hardware can be used. So what about speed? Speed is comparable or even a bit lacking, so that's not it. Surely the peripherals are better for the mac? No. So why on earth would they be better? They aren't. Even Adobe a few years ago admitted that the PC version of photoshop was better than the then-current version of photoshop. That was pretty much the nail in the coffin of the myth. But it sure didn't stop it because the elitist mentality of mac users HAVE to have something that they can call their own. Recently Adobe even announced that they will not be making a 64 bit version of photoshop for Mac. Part of the reason for this is apple's fault entirely. Apple cancelled Carbon64; the 64 bit version of the 32bit API. That would force Adobe to rewrite vast portions of code in Cocoa. So they decided that the minority share of photoshop sales would have to suffer because it wasn't financially feasible for them to rewrite photoshop.

So... If they don't have graphics design as the niche they can cling to as the mac-excellence point, then what can they cling to? Productivity applications? Well... Probably not. Microsoft Office 2008 is selling like hotcakes. So that means their productivity apps must also be lacking (there's some decent ones, but office is better). Ummm... gaming? I'm not even going to go there. That comparison would be laughable. Media creation? They have "dummy" software that pretty much anyone can use. But powerful? Not so much. Development? I will admit some of their development tools are decent. But better? Not really.

There's just nothing that a mac excels at that a PC can't do just as well or faster, cheaper, better.

Krakkens and shit. stop tempting them.

At the time we switched, it was Windows NT or the Mac. The Mac was more effective at memory management.

My understanding for desktop publishing, and please please correct me if I am wrong, is that it handles fonts substantially differently than a Windows based computer does. Something about pixel representation on screen and within the font calculations. Now, the implication from the design team is that substantially differently also equals better.

For video editing, it's not feasible for us to move out of the Mac realm at this time. However, I brought up this week, the idea of moving the photographers, desktop publishers and few others over to the Windows side. This would be to remove the Mac IS position and we'd bring a consultant in every once in a while for the video editors. I know this isn't going to happen because we'd have to pry the Macs from their cold dead hands.

    #1 REASON I HATE MACS-
FIRST DAY I BOUGHT ONE, CRASH, BROKEN, RETURN, AND THEN THEY SAID IN THEY'RE HAPPY FORGIVING FACES, "We're sorry, our staff cannot fix this kind of damage." :5 :5 :5 :5 :5 :5

Just because you never have gotten a virus doesn't mean that you can't. *I* have gotten one virus in the last 15 years or so on the PC. It's because I know what I'm doing and I know what NOT to do. The virus I did catch was entirely my fault and I have to give the virus writer props. He caught me flat-footed. I knew as soon as I did it (that which I did to catch it) that I had made a mistake. I was complacent and wasn't paying enough attention to what I was doing and whack. Virus. But basically, not getting a virus doesn't mean you CAN'T.

As for the crashing... I don't think either platform crashes more often than the other right now. I have had more crashes with linux/bsd than I have with either operating system lately. Even vista. But my contention is that when the mac crashes there is more opportunity for a catastrophic failure. The days of the "sad mac" are pretty much over but not forgotten.

At the time we switched, it was Windows NT or the Mac. The Mac was more effective at memory management.
I will have to agree with you. At that time. The mac was superior in most ways as far as graphics design. To quote an old advertisement though: "We've come a long way baby!" Mac's just haven't progressed like the PCs have.

The font thing... I can't remember hearing that argument, but I know the macs can handle most font types without modification and the PC sometimes has issues with postscript fonts. But there's software that rectifies that situation as well. So I can't really consider it an issue.

One of the more compelling arguments is high-end color matching. Supposedly the mac has an edge (albeit a small one) in that department. But I can't comment on that much because I've never seen any issues in that area on the PC. You can still use pantone colors and such without software mods or anything on the PC so I don't know where the argument comes from. Someone that hasn't been out of the graphics design and DTP field for a few years would have to answer that. I've moved on to programming as my area of expertise at the moment (well, it's always been my area of expertise... just haven't had a job doing it as long as I'd like to have).

Being as how a lot of companies still have that "mac is better" attitude when it comes to gd, and dtp, the mac might have another slight edge in that those companies can handle file formats that are mac-centric or mac-only. In those cases an extra step on the PC would be needed to convert to those formats, or have the company do it on the other end. But if those same companies can handle pc formats then the argument is null and void.

Basically they are so close that it really doesn't even matter any more in the graphics design and desktop publishing field. Mixing and matching within the workplace is a pain, so a company just has to decide which they want and go with it. Either way they are going to do fine.

Krakkens and shit. stop tempting them.
