Really? You have Chinese-speaking friends over there? Partly because Japanese is so formal, simply using the improper politeness level (using terms or verb forms that are too familiar or too formal) or saying something discourteous can be pretty offensive already. Don't know anything about German, can't help you there :P

The extent to which so many people are technology/computer illiterate ceases to amaze me. Seriously, electronic devices have so thoroughly permeated business, culture, and society that it's all but impossible to get away from them. How can people go about life without at least the skill to learn how to use it? Even more so if you work at a tech-oriented company. (Which I gather yours is?)

Liberal arts college. Several people who learned Chinese pretty fluently, and a few international students besides. The roommate speaks pretty solid Japanese, actually.

My jaw has been dropping like this the past two days, since we share general office space. I had to explain what programming languages were. I have not felt like this since high school, when I had to explain what a drop down menu was.

(And yes. You might say it's tech oriented.)

My company kinda screwed me over bouncing me from project to project from day to day. Basically making me about half as productive as I could be, which does not go over well with someone like me. Now the company is in financial trouble and I could have told them that was inevitable with the inefficiency that was inherent in the way the personels time was being managed.
