You are absolutely right jello, we aren't there yet. But imagine what would happen if Mccain won the election against Obama, by a narrow margin. Then we might be there.

Re: Are we heading for disaster?

We are in the early stages of the great downfall of all democratic societies:

The dawning realization by the majority that they can vote themselves the largesse of the public till, be it just or no, until that till runs dry.

Fortunately, we guard with jealous wrath the chains meant to bind the tyranny of the majority, and defend the sacred individual rights with which we are born.

    Ultimately, there is one answer:

7.62mm. Full metal jacket. (Preferably boat-tail.)

    Hoo-ah!

Who was is that said, to para-phrase: "We're in an awkward time: It's too late to fix the system, but too early to shoot the bastards..." :4

Re: Are we heading for disaster?

Texas does not have the right to secede any more then any other state.
We yes agreed to join but technically we were annexed .

heres some links just from a quick Google search.

    http://www.texassecede.com/faq.asp

    http://tafkac.org/politics/texas_secession_rights.html

I'm a 5th generation Texan and damn proud of it , yeah one of those way to proud of Texas guys. but I'm tired of this myth.

also Texas would put up one hell of a fight if not win. Oklahoma is the only state that could take us ; only because they have most of the nukes.

Seriously, how much change do you really think the President in 2008 can make? You do realize that the President really doesn't have THAT much power. I think we need to get back to our Imperialistic roots and start kicking ass again. People used to respect the United States, but because we were at the top for so long, we got lazy. Today, our school systems are a joke because we have people that teach so they can coach, because its an easy job, because they like the hours, because whatever. If I were in charge of things, becoming a teacher would be the most difficult process in the work force. Teaching would be a very well paid, and very respected career. You wouldn't have these jackoffs that stick a movie into a VCR and go check their email for hours on end. But until we get our schools right, we're not going to get anything right. Second thing I would change is building up a very strong, very intimidating, very impressive military. I'm tired of this shit that soldiers can't fire until fired upon, don't have the BEST equipment on the battlefield, etc. The military would strike FEAR into it's combatants, whereas now it is often the butt of jokes. I think it's time to again start carrying that big stick, instead of just talking softly.

Imperialism? Now I'm confused, were you referring to the subjugation and rape of Africa, India, China, or Latin America?
Or perhaps it was aimed towards the expansionist policies here that helped fuel some of the most terrible wars in history?

Imperialism is and was a terrible idea. Many of the repercussions of the Age of Imperialism are still present today. It was reckless and irresponsible.

It's is absolutely preposterous to think that any nation can survive on its own. Particularly with complete and total disregard for another nation's (in this case, the one being taken over, and then the other nations going 'wait a minute bud...') will.

Each and every nation's economy is interlinked. Take a look at the South East Asian Financial crisis in the late 90's (Thai Bhat). The United States alone poured an unfathomable amount of money into this black hole to bail Thailand and the other countries out. Why? Various reasons, but more specifically (but certainly not singularly), Thailand and Japan are major trading partners. If Thailand takes a hit, so does Japan. If Japan takes a hit, so does everyone that Japan trades with. etc. I hope you can see where i'm going with that.

However, i suppose if we did something drastic, like change the way our economy works, with respect to the rest of the world(hell, we still run on the imperial units system, so why not?), or perhaps got together with some other fat cat imperialists, it wouldn't be too hard. At least not for the governments. Good luck getting the people to support those actions.

Huh, actually....maybe that brings us back on topic? We enter a new age of Imperialism, rampant rioting and revolution causes the down fall of the government.

Besides, back to Imperialism? Please. We're still Imperialist. We've got territories, and we're one of the few nations that still does.

Still i agree with you on education. I look back on my public schooling with nothing but disdain and disappointment when i compare it to those of my friends who went to a) better funded schools, b) more educationally responsible schools, c) more fiscally responsible schools.

Napoleon is credited largely with bringing the public school system to France. An amazing achievement. Education for everyone? Even the impoverished? Unheard of. Revolutionary. Awesome. But do you know what he said about it? " I can tell you, on any given day, on any given moment, what the children in those schools are reading and learning." (verbatim...i can't seem to get google work atm.) Such things come with a price.

A balance must be made between government regulations/funding (those two go hand in hand really) and what can be taught.

Still, there is always a heavy burden placed upon the teacher. Its very true that there are teachers who are just...terrible at what they do. They don't care. Terrible.Unforgivable (in my eyes, but then, if i had to teach some of my peers i'd be more than a little apathetic) But you won't find these guys just in the Public School System.

Not all of the responsibility of learning should fall on this end. The student, the person being taught, has to want to learn. To desire it, to need it. Otherwise, anything thing thrown at them will only be half received, or just bounce right off. Likewise, a teacher has to be able to want to render this change in their students. They both have to genuinely want this. All the money and the training in the world can't guarantee this.
Then again, that is a bit of an idealistic perspective.
Incentives to learning, and to teaching(with responsibility) need to be better and stronger. That would be a step in the right direction, but when you come right down to it, those who want to learn, will find a way. Those who don't, well, they'll find a way too.

I'd be interested to hear about fixes to the justice system...but then, that may be can of worms best left closed?

Re: Are we heading for disaster?

I think we are. That's why, after I get a degree in something (not sure what yet), I'm moving to Sweden/Norway. If the world falls apart, we can just go back to pillaging Europe. Also, I think Norway is socialized. There's a 60% tax on income, but you get free healthcare, etc. I'm not sure if the healthcare system is the atrocity that the Canadian one is.

To speed up the revolution, I can incite Michigan (where I live) to secede and ally with Quebec, which, according to my master plan, would leave Canada at the same time. During the chaos, I would make my escape to Europe and incite rebellion there.
