    Civil Service

Anyone here work as a Civil Servant? If you can, explain the health insurance.

I've been spoiled by the military for the last 4 1/2 years. And trying to read opm.gov is making me insane.

I'm trying to get enough information so I can show it to my wife and explain why me taking a GS-11 job is much better for our family then me staying active duty and being an E-4.

Well, as far as I can tell, taking a GS-11 is almost doubling your yearly pay.

You would be considered a federal civilian employee, correct? Not a postal worker?

    Re: Civil Service

I am. Basically, they give you a choice of several health plans. You have to read the material and choose which one works for you and your family if you are married. They have HMO plans where you just pay a co-pay for a office visit. Or there are plans where you have to pay a percentage of expenses until you reach your deductible and then they pay the rest. Some have dental coverage some don't. It's tough to choose and time consuming. One thing to remember is that you can chance plans one a year if you aren't happy with the one you chose. Also you have to choose based upon home much they will take from your checks. Good luck!
