    Internet Addiction

The reporter in this interview jumped around so much it's amazing how the go from one subject to another.

But other than that, in the end. I like how he some how drew a line from FPS to school shootings. IT ALL MAKES SINCE!

They did not draw a line between FPS and school shootings.

What they said is that there are indications that school shooters who commit suicide also take their computers lives with them by destroying their hard drives. In other words, the gamers' avatars appear to be inextricably intertwined with their real lives.

We've seen a less drastic version of this at TTP. Addicted players have asked for their online persona, i.e. their avatar and account, to be banned from TTP to help kill their addiction.

Sorry. I was trying to be sarcastic about those people destroying their harddrives. If you were planning on killing someone you would get rid of the evidence. Right? Since most people have computers and typing on a computer is more accpetable then writing. I would think that they would try to destroy the evidence first.

I agree with you on that point.

It seems to me that another reason for an internet addicted person to destroy his hard drive and/or computer would be because he blames it for his problem. In that case the computer would not be perceived as part of the person, but rather as another victim.

    Re: Internet Addiction

Just like any article about a subject such as this... ill simply respond by saying...

Computers provide an outlet for already existing personality and lifestyle traits. In other words.... the vast majority of players play games or use the internet for personal pleasure.. relief from every day life... or an escape from personal problems. Most of these people are perfectly normal and live out there lives uneventfully. Some however already have existing mental or emotional problems and the computer/gaming may either help with the problems or serve to further deteriorate them.

There is supposedly "evidence" that shows people who play violent video games go out and kill in real life... however there is also just as much "evidence" that shows that people who play violent video games have an outlet in the form of that game for any agression they may build up in real life and therefor are less likely to have problems or be violent in real life. And this "evidence" comes in the form of un-scientific research that takes only a small precentage of players and games into account over a severly shortened period of time.

So to conclude... most of these types of "articles" are "bullshit" articles. The only real thing here is addiction.. and lets face it.. there are worse things than the internet or gaming that you could be addicted to... like drugs.. or smoking.. or drinking.. and so on.
