Just finished The Last Kabbalist of Lisbon by Richard Zimler. A violent thriller from the 16th century Portugal. A slow start but a great read in the end.

Looking at Winter in Madrid by C. J. Sansome next.

If you want a mix of a bit of fantasy with mystery, try The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher.  It also had one run as a decent TV show on the SciFi Channel.

Or if you want a bit more fantasy, The Garrett Files by Glen Cook.

I also loved The Colour of Magic, The Light Fantastic, and Sourcery By Terry Pratchett. (Not mysteries, just good books)

Cool, thanks. I'll take a look at those. I do miss good mysteries.

Did anyone mention Alastair Reynolds? Um. Well, just in case, Alastair Reynolds. Very good hard sci-fi, with a slight hint of strange-in-the-head. Dammit, now I have to go back and read everything in this thread.

Can't find my copy of Catch-22 so I started 2001: A Space Odyssey last night. I'm sure it's going to be great. I'll watch the movie when I finish the book. I hate watching a movie of a book before reading the book it was based upon.

    Re: Books and Literature

Favorite books i used to read are Wrinkle in Time and Of Mice and Men.

One recent favorite (learned through college actually) is The Power and The Glory by Graham Greene. It was for a course on Christianity, and while im not Christian...or that religious to begin with, I thought it was a really great book.

I'm suprised no one has mentioned Terry Goodkind and the Sword of Truth series. I recently finished up reading that series earlier this year when the last book dropped. The ending was a little over the top, but definately didn't see it coming. Overall i reallly enjoyed the series and would recommend it to any fantasy reader, and to all you Robert Jordan fans.
