#1 - Go get a good sized bug zapper.. they honestly arnt that expensive.. backyardavenger seems overpriced. We got a very effective one thats the same size at Costco for like $150.... just doesnt have the collector at the bottom. Works wonders at night... and can help some durring daytime if placed in a spot out of direct sunlight.
#2 - Most yellow jackets prefer ground nests but they can live in almost anything. If you have that many in your yard im guessing you have a large nest with multiple entrances and exits in your ground. Look for bumps in the yard... and also look for places where the yellow jackets are closest to the ground. Not saying its a ground nest for sure... but thats my guess.
#3 - Some kind of spray bug killer is your best bet to actually take out the nest. Your trap should work fine for grabbing a decent amount of them but that wont stem the flow of yellowjackets much if at all... aside from maybe lowering the amount a tad. You need to get at the source because once you have yellow jackets you cant ignore them or it will most likely get worse each year.
#4 - Just by watching their movements it shouldnt be to hard to figure out places they are moving to and from or places there are more of them. Depending on your yard they may have a nest at the base of plants or bushes or even trees... but ive seen yellow jacket nests out in the middle of an open yard with a ton of entrances and exits. Also look along the foundation of your house and next to things like posts and poles.
Im no yellow jacket expert... but we have had yellow jacket problems in the past.. so this is personal info from what i remember in our battle with them.

The flamethrower idea is very amusing, to say the least. But we've found that there are actually dead spots in our backyard lawn, and there are multiple holes leading in and out of them (plural, there are several of these dead spots with holes in them). The source of the yellowjackets in the front of our house is actually the NEIGHBOR's yard, so we'll ask them about it if we get the chance. The dead spots are closer to our house than theirs, so that's why they haven't noticed yet.
According to my parents, they've already pumped pesticides into the dead spots before I took notice of the increase in yellowjacket activity. We're waiting to see how that turns out, and then we'll work from there."In matters of style, swim with the currents... in matters of principle, stand like a rock."
