Re: Pistol People - 9mm or .40 caliber?
There is plenty of good advice in this thread. I think the bottom line is that it really does not matter if you are shooting a bazooka or a $75 .38 special that you bought from the pawn shop. If you miss then all of them are useless and if you hit then all of them are lethal. Pick a gun that feels good to you. If it comes in many different calibers then choose the one to your shooting style. If you want to shoot all the time then pick one that has cheap ammo. If you only want to carry it then pick the one that you can shoot well and has great ballistics.
If someone told me they had $1,000 to spend on a personal defense weapon and on their list the most important was shooting ability mixed with stopping power then the Sig P229 in .357sig would be the gun. Later you could purchase a 9mm conversion barrel and shoot it for less $$$$. I love to shoot my P229 in .357sig. Only problem is it is around $16.00 a box for FMJ.
Sig is great, glock is great, walther is great, kimber is great, HK is great, springfield armory is great and many more.

Soy,
To be honest I really do not worry to much about home defence. I do however want to go shooting, so some ww2 and ww1 rifles would be great.
Maybe a side arm in the future.
Ohhh....And the previous post??. I thought you new my mind was baked!. My sense of humour is way out there!.

millwall, don't forget the good 'ole Colt 1911 that us yanks used in WWI some credit it to winning the war...was rated as WAYYY better than the 9mm Luger.
Yeah, I come from a revolver family also...that's what the carry guns are too.
And honestly, one round that I've fallen in love with is the .380.....a family member has a Bersa Thunderstorm 380 and I dunnoe why...it's a tiny lil bullet, but it is a HOOT to shoot...
and this is coming from a guy who considered anything under a .41mag a "woman's bullet"...

about personal defense though, imo it is Shotgun all the way. they are relatively inexpensive and so is the ammo, reliable and versatile. with one shotgun, without changing the barrel, you can use small but numerous birdshot, heavy turkey/buck loads, or absolutely i want to punch a hole in you Slug loads.

Also, the size difference would make very little difference in ability to hit. might change a glancing shot to a harder glancing shot, or a very close miss into a glance, but not a miss into a hit.
