    Re: How do you tip?

Well me and my girlfriend really only eat on one mexican restaurant in Victoria (La Tejanita). If you EVER have a chance to be down in the Victoria area you MUST eat there, their cheese enchiladas are absolutely amazing. Anyway, not many of them speak fluent english (no pun intended). Not many of the waiters/waitresses there do alot of service, but there is one girl who busts her ass to keep your drinks refilled. Every time i go i try to give her a 10 because she never lets my beer be empty or my girls margarita go dry.

Personally i respect waiters and waitresses. They have to deal with assholes and bitches on a daily basis. I could never work in the restaurant buisness; i would get fired on the first day for knocking the shit out of the guy who says his steak is over cooked lol.....

    Can I be that guy?

I hardly every tip. Yes. I am a douche. But I don't care. I don't like eating at resturants anyways. Now if I'm out with the wife, yes I'll tip. Only because she makes me. But when I do tip I leave a few bucks, unless I'm out at a really good place (Ruth Chris for example) I'll leave a nice tip.

Now if I'm at a place that takes 15% gratuity for a group. I say fuck it because they already took my money and why should I tip them.

    Re: How do you tip?

I understand the arguement "they live off tips" but how about this should a hard working person (figuring the majority of folk here work hard for their living) just give away 10 bucks of their hard earned cash to someone who doesn't deserve it? Really if these people that do not deserve tips are working at a restaurant they should be fired in honesty but there are still some that do get through that do no deserve the sympathy from me.

I feel for ya that you live off of tips but is that any kind of a living?

    Re: How do you tip?

Well, I guess in a way it comes down to being a pessimist or an optimist...(probably better words than this)

Does a server have to EARN your money by going above and beyond the call? or do they get it to start out for even doing basic service, and it can go up for great service, or down for downright bad service....

Also, about the 15-18% auto gratuity for big parties. BIG PARTIES SUCK FUCKING BALLS. That's why the auto-gratuity is there...if you get stiffed by a small 2 or 4 top, it's not big deal (the "top" size of a table is the # of people...large tables are called "big tops") cause they're gonna be gone fast, and you can reseat the table. When you get stiffed by a big table, you almost want to walk out there, chase them down, and confront them about it.
big tables are HAAARD...next time you're going out to eat w/a table of 8 or more, count how many times the server has to come by to refill bread/drinks or to pre-buss the dirty dishes...and it's annoying when you go get one refill, as you're setting it down, somebody else asks "Oh! can I get a refill please?" it's like, "dude...if you need a refill, could you have asked BEFORE I walked across the restaurant to get one for your buddy"

Why do I put up with the stress of it? Well, even with the fucking assholes and shit, which you get every day, I'm a good enough of a server that I'm able to still get good tips. I averaged over 23 dollars an hour sunday for a single shift from 8:30-3:00 at a breakfast and lunch restaurant where only 2 plates cost over 10 bucks..and there's no alcohol.
yeah, I'm fucking good at what I do.

Oh, and rudy? I worked at the Olive Garden on SPID by the mall from january to may this year :-P

It's not as hard as you'd think. Having done both, I thought being a line cook on a busy night was more difficult than being a server. All you have to do is a server is kiss ass and ask them if they'd like you to wax their pole free of charge and thank you sir.

If you're a cook, you have to bust your balls getting that shit out on time and done correctly. If they send it back, you have to remake it (again and again until they feel the steak is done correctly and fuck what the meat thermometer says) until they're happy with it. You don't get to get back at them, because if you try to pull any of the shit in movies like Waiting, your ass is fired and you will never get another job in any restaurant (even fast food shit like McD's or Taco Bell) unless you leave the state.

Servers can just ignore assholes or give them one of those "Yeah, fuck you too" smiles. Cooks just have to stand there and take it.

    Re: How do you tip?

20-25% at restaurants with good food and service.

At topless bars I'm the Party Santa Clause. Sky is the limit for tips as long as the beer is cold and fast and the conversations are honest. Lap dances and lies reduce the tips in a hurry. And I do one buck at the stage, that's it.

    Re: How do you tip?

for me i tend to usually tip around 20% but never really had bad service. one of my major things is at fast foodish places (esp. ike a taco del mar, subway, coffee shops) i always tip at least a dollar because having worked at taco del mar i know how annoying it can be to work minium wage, have a line of like 10 people at one time and not one of them even tips a penny, i mean i sitting here having to bust my ass to make you food, in front of you, act like i give a shit about you AND because its like an hour or two before close (we closed at nine and always got a rush at 7pm) i'm going to have to stay here longer to finish closing because i can't do any f the closing procedures til all of you are gone.
