I believe it is due to atmospheric pressure.(or lack thereof) Similar to scuba diving, when you are , say 30 yds below on your ascent to the surface, you need to exhale continuously, otherwise the air in your lungs expand too much/quickly. THis is due to the change in pressure from a further depth to a shorther depth. As you leave the atmosphere, the lack of pressure allows the cells to expand limitlessly. I think this might be correct, or I could just be talking out of my turdcutter. :8

Yeah, I guess you can say it's similar to what you described... but I think it's more like dropping an Ice cube into a pressurized tank of boiling water; where both the pressure extreme and temperature extreme is affecting the object in question.

And of course, let's not forget the radiation, cosmic rays, and all the other stuff in space...
