Oil derricks are too big for pirates. One, it's a bunch of miners at sea. Hasn't anyone seen that bruce willis movie armageddon? I wouldn't mess with people on the platform for a million dollars. Also, are there any near sudan? And it seems like it'd be really dangerous and hard for the pirates to capture one, not to mention if those things are that valuble I'm sure the crew has some sort of defense. And alot of special forces teams are apparently trained in the whole seperate subject of 'oil platform seisure' so obviously it's common enough that someone has to be trained on how to take it back. Although it'd be kinda hard to take an oil platform. Supposing the stupid pirates didn't blow it up with reckless soviet-surpluss weapons fire, they'd have to dig in, off the coast (fairly far too) in a place that couldn't move, and had no supply line to it, plus it has a helipad and is valuble to the mother country and big rich people. I think it's kinda impractical.

Also, does anyone else remember about 3 years ago, the story about the pirates that attacked the cruise liner, but it fended them off with some sort of less than lethal weapon? I think it was one of those directed sound amplifier majiggers. Does anyone know what I'm talking about?
Oh come on Man.... you've got to know that many of the Ports on the West coast of Africa are controlled by Gangs and "Illegal organizations"; and potentially the officials are corrupt at best. Docking a ship, any ship, would just be a matter of paying the right official. That's just the reality of the government in that region; it's corrupt. You can research news report after news report to understand the extent of the corruption.

    I don't think I understand what you're saying...

but I wanna point out that oil derricks are immobile.....they're platforms at sea......stuck to the bottom....of the sea......unable to move............

Bump from the past, but still... Couple links provided below are the tip of the iceberg. Look for more info if you're so inclined.

A couple EU Nations have been dumping Nuclear, and other toxic waste in Somalian waters since the early 90's. Parts of the northern coast are basically ravaged, and people's health on shore is being effected. This is apparently still happening.

MANY nations have been illegally fishing in Somalian waters for decades.
    http://www.illegal-fishing.info/item...approach_id=13

From what I understand, Somalian fishermen had teamed up with local militia to scare off the ships dumping in their waters, and eventually it all turned to piracy. Not at all saying this makes it ok, but fucking hell... I'd take up a gun myself in that situation. There's no stability in Somalia, and some of the corrupt 'officials' were taking $3/ton from Italian mafia linked co.s for dumped waste, whereas proper disposal of most costs $1000. Moving toxic waste in such a way is illegal for any member state of the EU.

Interesting reading, and I suggest you get into it.

Also, Barre signed over 2/3rds of Somalia's oil to US companies.

Got to love 4, 5 and 17 year old stories that have the words appear and may have in them. Not trying to bust your balls man but it was tough for me to read much of this based on my previous sentence. Where is the follow up? In a world so green focused are you telling me that we have done no follow up since March of 2005 on the possible dumping of nuclear waste? Was this supposed to be some type of justification for the pirates?

Hard to follow up in a war zone filled with pirates, maybe? ... Just a guess, though.

UNEP believes this is still happening, so the UN is at least somewhat aware.

In no way is it justification, but some of the stories I've read point at armed groups on fishing boats going out as a 'coast guard' before piracy became so prevailent. Perhaps a part of the reason for the origins of such widespread piracy.

The supposed main perpetraitor of this is the Ndrangheta. Read more.
