Pigs are a lot tougher than deer though since a male hog with its adrenaline up will keep going where a deer would drop dead. Hogs also have thicker hides than deer and smaller vitals. You also hav2e to normally shoot through brush.

I wouldn't try most medium calibers for deer past about 200 yards myself as I like to know that I put a very large wound on the animal. I hate having to track down wounded ones.

Hehe, be sure to ask Flea about the time he tried to put a new sling mount on his AR.

Wrong ammo or a shit shot. Not busting anyones chops but I can guarantee you that I could take a pig down with one shot from a .223. Maybe they were shooting at them running wide open or something but a .223 is a killing machine. 3200 ft per second on a 65 grain bullet = dead shit on the other end with a properly placed shot.

I will go kill a deer tomorrow with one to prove a point if I need to. From my experience it is tougher to take a deer down than a hog.
Yes Nuck, you can kill a pig with a .223 in one shot if you get a head or a neck shot. But body shots don't do shit with a .223. A good sized pig caked in mud, you aren't going to get much out of the .223. I hunt pigs to exterminate them, and honestly the body is a bigger target than the head. I don't want to miss and let them get away. When I run up on a pack of 10, I want to kill every last one of them. Trying to pull off head shots on the run is a bad idea. Its hard enough to just hit them.

Long and short of it, in ideal conditions a .223 will do fine, but ideal conditions can't be counted on.

Oh, and no I am not the best shot either. Sometimes I amaze myself with the shots I make, and likewise the shots I miss. :9

I watched a hunting show the other day where they were using Glocks chambered in 10mm with laser sites on hogs. It was badass. They were rapid firing on some of them. THe 10mm did the trick even on body shot but the 10mm is one hell of a round.

Sometimes you just have to say 'screw it' and buy a Mosin or Mauser for that big 'I'll bring it down' kill. The Garand does the job too, but you can buy 10 Mosins or around 6 Mausers for what one Garand costs.
