    Re: Swiss Legalize Heroin

This is great so far... I was expecting raving lunatics! :P

One thing to keep in mind, that seems to have been missed by many, is that this is not blanket legalization of heroin... It's a program to provide heroin to addicts in a safe environment. Joe the asshole pusher who's out on the corner right now will still be a bastard criminal, and will not be paying taxes once this is enacted. As stated in the article, the heroin provided at these sites will be from government approved labs, and be in carefully measured doses.

One of the things I find interesting about this, is that the Swiss population voted to legalize heroin, but denied marijuana easily. It makes me curious to see what they've been reading in their news about their trial programs for the past few years, and obviously shows that they are not in support of wide open drug use.

Who will foot the bill is obvious, but cost comparison is where a real question is. On the one hand, the government's intention to set up "safe injection" sites is quite clear, so there will be an obvious cost involved. On the other hand, with a free supply of heroin for addicts, that seems like it'll remove some cash flow for organised crime, and largely negate the costs of a police war on junk. Considering how much crime is perpetrated by junkies looking for a hit, it seems likely that policing requirements will likely drop. What kind of comparison will there be in what is saved, and what needs to be payed out? I'm curious to find out, and will be keeping tabs on progress, studies, and news.

I don't think employers will be required to put up with heroin addicts any more they are required to put up with some slosh drunk asshole.

The effects of opiates are obviously terrible, though I think they are better known now than 100 years ago. Much like tobacco use is dropping due to health concerns, I honestly don't think there'll be lineups of new addicts ready to try out a free product, though I may well be wrong. I know a few people who've had weekend habits while still retaining a job. Damn near all of them kicked the habit, the ones that didn't ended up dead early, and one that quit is a quadriplegic, deaf mute. Not too glamorous, really. Everyone that has their shit together obviously knows that drug abuse is terrible, but will the likely drop in crime, and policing demands outweigh the cost of supporting addicts? Will the injection sites be successful? Will new people get hooked on the drug due to the safety net?

    I'm damn curious.

I think if it IS going to be legalized, whatever drug, and they have to be produced by someone, it should be regulated directly by the government, and not privatized. Bear in mind, these raw materials will not be commercialized (to the general public), but rather supplied to the governmental institute leading the project, if it were to happen in the US or elsewhere.

Any drug production outside of the Governmental program should be considered illegal.

I was not there during prohibition, but I belive that the supporters of prohibition had very similiar beleives about Alcohol that you have described above regarding the Wacky Tabacky. However, many years later, a member of the Anheiser-Busch family has propelled themselves to the front lines of American Politics.... McCain's wife... what ever here name is. If I'm not mistaken, she is closely connected to the Anheiser-Busch family..... am I incorrect in that statement?

So Legal/Illegal is a matter of time and perspective, generational time and generational perspective. We, the People, fight for that perspective.
The whacky tabacky kills millions of people...this is one drug that is preposterously legal...its ridiculous.

Cindy Mccain's family owns one of the largest distributor companies of Anheuser Busch. Legal/ Illegal is a matter of time and perspective, but harmless and harmful aren't. Alcohol is legal, as well as cigarettes....doesn't mean they are harmless, they cause a variety of diseases and thousands of accidents and deaths due to drunk driving, etc.

Most of the people supporting prohibition were the families that owned the alcohol cartels...Yea we the people should fight for that perspective but we the people should not be blinded by it, and soon enough, we know not what we are fighting for.

Whacky tabacky is marijuana, not tabacco. That aside interesting points there.

    Re: Swiss Legalize Heroin

We do restrict/censor discussion of illegal activities, discussions and images of things like drugs

As interesting as this discussion is, posts concerning the legalization of marijuana in the united states have been locked down before, this is similar.
