Aldous Huxley and "The Doors of Perception"

I've been reading this book and it is simply awe inspiring. It is written with such eloquence and intelligence, that I'm amazed that this came from a human mind. I recommend all of you to pick up a copy today. It's a really difficult read, however a worthwhile one.

Aldous Huxley - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

He also has some incredible truthful quotes about humanity and the world we live in:

    On Religion:

You never see animals going through the absurd and often horrible fooleries of magic and religion... Dogs do not ritually urinate in the hope of persuading heaven to do the same and send down rain. Asses do not bray a liturgy to cloudless skies. Nor do cats attempt, by abstinence from cat's meat, to wheedle the feline spirits into benevolence. Only man behaves with such gratuitous folly. It is the price he has to pay for being intelligent but not, as yet, quite intelligent enough.
    On Liberty:

Liberty? Why it doesn't exist. There is no liberty in this world, just gilded cages.
    On psychological totalitarianism:

And it seems to me perfectly in the cards that there will be within the next generation or so a pharmacological method of making people love their servitude, and producing ... a kind of painless concentration camp for entire societies, so that people will in fact have their liberties taken away from them but will rather enjoy it, because they will be distracted from any desire to rebel by propaganda, brainwashing, or brainwashing enhanced by pharmacological methods
    :Y:

I really really want to read Brave New World...

I especially like that quote about religion, it's very disappointing.

Aldous Huxley and "The Doors of Perception"

The difference between animals and human beings is that while animals know, human beings know that we know.

Without thinking about it, yeah it's mindless.

Human beings have the power to reason, and know we are using reason. We can use logic, and know we are using logic. Animals can do neither. While they can reason, and they can make logical decisions, they cannot possibly comprehend beyond a basic level what they are doing. Human beings are unique in this aspect. So while the author states that animals don't go through the rituals we go through, it would be unrealistic to expect them too when they cannot be as smart as us.

Brave new world is one of my favorite books. I've never read "The Doors of Perception".

Humans can think about thinking. Animals cannot.

Hmmmmm I'd say with psychological totalitarianism that he really hit the nail on the head.
