    Big,

My Brother In Law and his father are fairly high-ups at Abbott. If you are interested in sending your resume send me a PM and I'll see what I can do.

The belief that grants are highly competitive is a little bit of a myth. I've been in academic science for a while (about to go up for full professor), in pharmacology and toxicology. I've also reviewed grants for years for NIH. The lower half of the grants can be just burned (triaged, in grantese), so if there are 100 grants, your real competition is only 50 (assuming that you can write a good grant). Most funding percentiles are admittedly a little low (10-15th) these days, but that still is 10-15 out of the real competition of 50.

The 'slave to the begging for money' thing I hear a lot. Honestly, I don't get it. I hear from my colleagues in industry all the time that they were doing great and kicking ass, and then bam, their division was discontinued. Where is the benefit of personal effort and achievement in that environment? If I ever lose my job, it is because my efforts were insufficient to support my continued employment, period. That's a fair deal. Politics? Never had politics get in the way of my career advancement. Never. They leave you alone if you are doing your job right.

If academic positions interest you, I am in your field and I might know of openings before they are published. Let me know.

    bigdog,

Since my mother was diagnosed with colon cancer back in Oct. of 2008 I took her straight to the City of Hope in Duarte, California. I have to say when you hear a family member has cancer it's a huge shock to your system. From the day we 1st visited the COH we had the feeling that everything would be okay. I'm happy to report that my Mother had surgery to remove a nearly 60mm tumor from her colon and is now undergoing chemo therapy and is doing very well.

Anyway, I just wanted to pass along a link to their career's page in case you may be interested.
    http://www.cityofhope.org/about/care...s/default.aspx

This is place is amazing in my opinion.

    Just a thought.

Make it idiot proof and someone will make a better idiot.
