Re: 819 Billion Dollar Stimulus Plan Passes
Yopu begin the paragraph with this..
Another thing you have to keep in mind is that sometimes it's the worker themselves that help to cripple a business.
I am curious as to what was discussed with your employer.

Re: 819 Billion Dollar Stimulus Plan Passes
It was that as it stands right now unions have to have a campaign and then a vote. With the EFCA if, during their initial probing as to the possibility of setting up a union in a company, they get 51% of the people to agree then there is no vote needed and the other 49% are automatically counted in.
Also the way the current law stands both the union and the company have the right to campaign before the "election" for a union. Under this new law the company no longer has the right to campaign.
And "unionized labor" has crippled some businesses.

Re: 819 Billion Dollar Stimulus Plan Passes
Unions were a great thing about 100 years ago when employees were severely mistreated. Many employee rights were gained during that time, but things are different now. Unions are ridiculous, such as the auto workers union owns and operates a golf course that costs them millions per year. The reason the American auto industry has suffered for so long was due to the increased labor rates compared to other countries. So I believe Unions were a good thing before employees were properly protected by law, but now I do not see their main benefit for our economy (yes they benefit individual members of the unions, but not the industries the work in).

Re: 819 Billion Dollar Stimulus Plan Passes
With regard to the stimulus plan, I would love to listen to the advice that Bush and Obama received. Common sense tells us that neither of them dreamed up a stimulus package on their own. They were advised by economists, great investors (ala Warren Buffett), etc.
My hunch is that the purpose of the spending isn't really to "stimulate" the economy. Instead I believe the purpose is to control the rate that the housing bubble deflates instead of just letting it pop. That and to reduce the depth of a recession or depression, not necessarily to return to growth. Growth comes after the market finds a natural bottom and figures out what it wants to do next.
