What Tex said, the Student Temp jobs are great. They work around your school schedule. One of the Reservists I know, got a student temp job here at NAS Fort Worth JRB and he starts out at $18 and hour. That's a great pay for a temp jobs. Now I'm not saying you'll get that job. Just stating that there are jobs like that our there.

I applied for one a few years ago, but some college student who had the position before decided to keep it. But, if I chose to do one away from home, do you get to live on base or something?

No. Base housing is only reserved for Active Duty Military.

Yes one summer I was paid as a GS-4 (~12.50/hr) and last summer as a GS-2 (~10.00/hr). I have found that they ususally pay from GS-1 to GS-4 depending on the funding that the hiring organization has. For example the first one that I found was with a network concepts division for the Army where I was paid as a GS-4 they were under a bigger organization and had more funding, but I also did lots of busy work and had a very boring summer.

Last summer when I worked at the installation safety office they were under a smaller organization which had less funding for summer hires in the student temp employment program. I got more hands on experience with this job for example we handled all building safety inspections for the entire post. I was able to go out with installation fire and military police departments and even participated in a huge inspection with people who came from the pentagon in inspecting housing units for injured soldiers. The experience I gained from this job was worth the 2 dollars less an hour because I am now able to apply them more.

Any job like this looks great on a resume especially at a younger age where we are in college or preparing to begin college. Most are a full 40 hours a week so not only are you gaining great work experience and a great pay for the summer if you choose to do a summer postition.

I also know they have them during the year that also apply with some organizations in the government.

I also found, at least was told, they tend to look for college juniors and seniors as a priority for hiring. The first one I got I ended up waiting till almost half of the summer was over before they contacted me to work.

It also depends on what you are studying. I for example was not studying something that really applied to network communications at the time and so I did not look as good of a candidate as others did. My second one looked alot better though because I had experience with some of the tasks I had to complete.

The other benefit is they will ususally ask you to come back the for another term and will usuually fight or you to have better pay as well. For me they are currently in the process of getting me hired again for the same job I had last semester, like I said networking, once you get in the governement network it is much easier to get a "real" job later in the future because you have already had experience in teh "system"

Also I know the Army has actual internship positions that are usually a year and they pay at a higher level to dont have much info on these but I will try and dig some up.

Correct they have designated smoking areas at every government facility. At my last summer job they had a picnic table outside that the people who smoked (and those who didn't i.e. me) would chill at.
