semi-on topic-
the cell processor is actually developed by toshiba, ibm and sony i think...which is anticpated to run the new ps3 when it comes out. that cell sounds like some very kewl techonology if they do pull it off. very high potential.old small blurb
but theyre looking to use it in just about anyhting they can...phones, toasters, computers, consoles, etc. :P

Why on earth would you need 9 cores? For running 9 applications at once? Current games are not even utilizing 2 cores. Most game code is single string, which means that mutltiple cores are pointless.
I see this is a good long term change... and I do mean long term. The dual core technology is great because it allows us to free up resources while running multiple applications.
I think the Cell processor will be over priced and not be utilized the way the developers hope for. I think that AMD and Intel are on the right track. The Cell processor is a jump a little too far ahead. It is a cool technology though.

AMD vs Intel
well you just sorta contradicted yourself
ops:
saying that multiple cores are overkill, then praise amd/intel for going down the multi-core development path, hehehe :P
both of which are working on pushing out quad-core cpus
from the stuff ive read on cell, while it has effectively 9 cores, its seen as a single cpu to whatever platform its installed on, which is part of the beauty of the processorit has the 'main' powerpc 64b core that does most of the every day stuff, but in turn, it doles out smaller tasks to the other cores...its essentially a small parallel computing grid, on one cpu :P kinda like seti@home or any of those other distributed computing things. i personally dont think its too far ahead, its actually long overdo. theyve been milking x86 processors for so long now...all they keep doing is tacking on these special instruction sets that give it one little more boost and all those extra instructions just add to a larger, hottter, more complex cpu. but i digress :P
here's a few more cell articles if anyone is interested...
