WMG, youtube, and your feelings about copyright

As you may or may nor know I post montages on youtube, not to show how bad ass I am, but simply to show what I'm capable of. I know there's better players than me, but it's still fun to make videos. However, lately, WMG has been making it hell for me. It's simple format really, you have a song, footage, and maybe even pics of how well you did. But there's a problem, you have to choose the right song, and that's WMG is pissing me off, all of my choices are disappearing due to copyright. And it's not just me, it's pretty much everyone who posts videos on the site. I can understand Metallica copyrighting their music, but Stone Temple Pilots? I didn't even know they were on the list!

    Look

now look at one of my most recent videos....

What the hell? How was I supposed to know there was a copyright on that to where I can't use it in a video? But if you want to know what REALLY pisses me the fuck off about all this, look at the video here...

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dR_5aKXhLC0

Wind Up tells you that the video has content from them. WHY THE FUCK WON'T WMG DO THE SAME!!!!??

Nobody is stealing the music, if anything they're promoting the band. In my honest opinion, WMG is being selfish and greedy, and is trying to fuck you over just so they can get your money. I don't care if it is copyrighted, it's my video, I like the band, and if I want to use their music, I have every right to.

What do you think, and no bullshit, I want your honest opinions.  :3

I made a Christmas vid for ttp. Everyone put in hours of work to make it, then it gets fucking muted, that shit annoys me.

It's the music industry being totally retarded, as usual. At least they say they're gonna start calling off the lawsuits against individuals and start working with the ISP's to shut illegal downloads down...but this is just annoying, like you said, its not like you're stealing, you're basically promoting. Its just lame all the way around.

funny that you mention this, I was just browsing the youtube page of a local radio station (103.1 The Buzz) and one of the videos was silent and it was because of these copyright things.

I was a bit surprised especially since it is a radio station, they play the music all the time on their website and on the actual station. Also this station hosts the biggest concert in Florida every year (The Buzz Bake Sale) where they invite a dozen + bands for an all day party.

Kind of BS that they arent allowed to play what was most likely a short piece of a song during a larger video.

heres 2 videos, the second being from the buzz bake sale itself

Re: WMG, youtube, and your feelings about copyright

Copyright is confusing law, but the bottom line is this - the music belongs to the artists. It is how they put food on the table for their families, pay their promoters, their stage dancers, their lighting crews, sound engineers, etc. It's not like the artists get to keep every dime. In fact, I would bet that they get to keep only pennies of every dollar that their music brings in.

As the economy tanks further you will see companies get even more aggressive with preserving their revenue streams, even the relatively small coin from copyright. For internet businesses like Facebook, YouTube, mySpace, etc. their entire revenue stream is based on copyright and advertising.

Some of the musicians on TTP are trying to get their own forum for music topics. A strong case for such a forum might be made by using the forum to collaborate on original music scores for game videos, TTP Source servers, and so forth.

If you legally purchase music and put it on a video of yourself, not making money from it how is it illegal. You purchased the music to listen to...

Re: WMG, youtube, and your feelings about copyright

I'm assuming you are talking about buying a CD or MP3 track.

In that case you are correct in that you bought the music for you to listen to. You did not, however, buy the copyright which allows you to make copies. The owner of the music owns the copyright and makes copies for people like you to buy.

Here is the primary section of copyright law that relates to what you are talking about. It's pretty bewildering, even to seasoned lawyers. To master it one pretty much has to work with it every day.

On a related note, I came across this article earlier today. It relates to my first post in this thread. Bloggers and news agencies are fighting over article copyrights.
