    I'm mixed Mury.

To have the kid come to the station is kind of a power move to put him off balance or in a weaker stance in my opinion. If the kid has guns registered, why not go see the guns, or just interview him discretely the next time he came to campus.

However.... was there enough to justify that move? If he had been arguing for the legalization of marijuana, would she have called the DEA? Granted, the article doesn't give you the details in minutiae, but I didn't get the impression he was advancing any sort of physically violent agendas.

the thing is by having him come down to the station it was handled discreetly, having the police pull you aside at school in front of your peers would be both humiliating and disruptive to the individual involved ; imagine trying to concentrate on class work the rest of the day after talking with the police.

the cops acted appropriatley they got a call and investigated the situation.

the teacher on the other hand is a nut case and was way out of line considering the topic was with in the proscribed guidelines for the speech. had the guy actually brought a gun to class that would be a whole nother matter.

Klan members are given permits to demonstrate and to parade and to make speeches. Yet, a student who makes a reasoned argument for the carrying of concealed handguns gets reported to the police?

    SUCH asininity. SUCH hypocrisy.

Remember people, this is about the first amendment, not the second.
Those who can...DO......Those who can't...Teach. This was a Communications Prof. who can't/wouldn't communicate. The Prof. should be brought up on charges for filing a false complaint with the Police. How much of their time was wasted with this stupidity? How much of the students time was wasted because of this false claim? How well is the rest of the semester going to go for this/these students with a prof. that is obviously biased againsed them?

Welcome to liberal college campuses......Where you have complete Freedom of Speech.....as long as the administration agrees with you.Facist Mofo's.
Would the prof. have reported anything to the cops if their speech was againsed students carrying guns?
Oh, it happens on conservative campuses, but I bite my tongue for now.
enf-Jesus its been like 12 minutes and you're already worried about stats?! :-P

Well the cops were just investigating a complaint they received. That is their job.My concern is with the moron who did the complaining. They were the only person in the wrong here, and wasted police time/money investigating an absolutely false and frivolous claim.

If I were the kids parents.....I would pull his ass out of that shithole..NOW.

As Texan said, going down to the station is far less intrusive than them showing up at your doorstep. He was probably given a choice I would guess, and probably had a choice to skip it altogether.

In 2007, Shibley noted, a student at Hamline University in Minnesota was suspended after writing a letter to an administrator arguing that carrying concealed weapons on campus may help prevent tragedies like the one at Virginia Tech. The student was allowed to return only after undergoing a psychological evaluation, he said.
I think this is even more fucked up.

    Agreed.

The person at fault is the professor who reported it without enough proof to validate his/her fears.

Justice Abe Fortas "Neither students nor teachers shed their constitutional rights to freedom of speech or expression at the schoolhouse gate."
Different story but along the same lines, if we dont shed freedom of speech at the gate why should we shed the right to keep and bear arms....
