Here's a good link that explains the gist of it back when Apple charged iPod touch users the last time

The money quote from the article:
“It’s an accounting requirement that if you upgrade a device that’s not on a subscription, you have to charge,” Needham and Company financial analyst Charles Wolf said. “Apple has a choice of what to charge, but they have to charge.”

"For both Apple TV and iPhone, the Company indicated it may from time-to-time provide future unspecified features and additional software products free of charge to customers. Therefore, sales of Apple TV and iPhone handsets are recognized under subscription accounting in accordance with SOP No. 97-2. The Company recognizes the associated revenue and cost of goods sold on a straight-line basis over the currently estimated 24-month economic lives of these products with any loss recognized at the time of sale. Costs incurred by the Company for engineering, sales, marketing and warranty are expensed as incurred."

I vote yay.
I love mine. I've had my original 8gig for over 2 years now. It's actually my second one because of some experiementing with jailbreak on the first one. Only thing that I don't like is the no sending of pictures through text messaging. But, I think there going to fix that with the new 3.0 update. I love all the app that you can get for free. It has a great UI. I played with my mom's crackberry, what a clusterf***! The iPod function is awesome. I remember the days that you had to have special hookups for earphones.
Buy it. It's cheaper then when it first came out.
