Giving Blood...

I'm advised not to give blood because I'm too little. I was going to give it when I was in high school but a friend of mine who weighs the same gave it and passed out when she walked back into class... not because it freaked her out, but because she was under the weight limit. So, hopefully one day I'll be able too.

Yea in Canada you have to be at least 110lbs.

That's why they give you juice and cookies. In the case of an underweight person it should be steak and potato(e)s.

Y'know, it's funny, but I've never really given it a lot of thought. I'm not opposed to it on moral or religious grounds or anything, and there's even a Children's hospital a few blocks away, it just never really occurred to me. There isn't a whole lot in the way of blood drives or advertising for it around here.

And Christine, you'd think they could just draw less blood for smaller people, but I guess there's a regulation amount they have to take or something. Still seems a little silly, though.

Yeah the minimum is around a pint. A pint for a small person like Christine is a lot. For a 6'2" 220lbs guy like me...its a joke.

I try and try to donate blood. Every time they come to campus I stop by. When they come to church, I stop by. I try. But they refuse to take my blood. Because since I am an openly gay dude, they will not take my blood. Its a lingering practice from when HIV was discovered and it was highest in gay males. But times have changed and a low-income black woman is more at risk than me. They still take hers, but not mine. They test every donated blood thoroughly so the grounds for refusing my blood because I am at risk for the HIV virus is just bullshit. I'm clean and extremely healthy. So I will keep stopping by and I will keep attempting. One day they will scrap this asinine practice.
