They used to bring the blood drive bus to the office building I worked at every however many weeks you could give. I always gave, and they ask a ton of questions. I couldn't give one time because I had been to Mexico the month before and they thought I might have SARS or some BS. First, if I had SARS I wouldn't be trying to give blood. Second, like Razor said they test it all for everything possible before storing it.

"Canadian Blood Services is still amidst controversy for its heavy-handed blood donor’s questionnaire. Any man who has had sex with another man, even once, since 1977 is permanently banned from donating blood for life—even if he’s in a monogamous relationship and practices safe sex."

From the article:
Critics of the exclusionary policy said it bars potential healthy donors, despite the increasing need for donated blood, and discriminates against gays. The FDA recognized the policy defers many healthy donors but rejected the suggestion it’s discriminatory.
Anyone who’s used intravenous drugs or been paid for sex also is permanently barred from donating blood.

Re: Giving Blood...
I wish I could donate blood, but freshman year of college I got Hepatitis A from either a dirty Dorm bathroom or the food on campus. I'm betting dirty bathroom because we had a psychopath on our floor who called himself "The Mad Shitter" because he would smear words on the walls of the stalls in his own poop.
I kid you not...
This went on for a semester or so...walk into the bathroom at 4 AM to piss and find random words scribed in poo on the walls.
Bleh...
Anyway...Around spring break I started puking and didnt stop for 3 days, went to the infirmary and got diagnosed with Hep. A.
My body now has the antibodies and I am on the NO list for donating blood. I was the universal donor...sucks.
