    Painting a car

Ok i've finally decided to paint my car myself verses paying someone. I figure the worst thing that happens is a fuck it up and then let someelse do it. I have 2 practice cars before i get to mine. they are both solid color but mine will have 2. Along with a powder added to the clear coat over one color to make it glow in the dark.

So has anyone painted a car that might have some tips for me. The goal is to not fuck up the first 2 but to have it down pretty much by the time i get to mine. I want it to look like it wet. I've heard about hand rubbed laquer and base coat clear coat. Any suggestions?

Washing it every once in a while would be a good idea. Seriously, I have no idea. Just don't use Krylon

Wait.. You have 2 'practice' cars and you don't want to pay a professional to paint your car? Which honestly isn't too terribly expensive considering. And wtf glow in the dark?!? You are a strange one xD. Good luck I suppose, it's certainly not something I would try my untrained hand at, unless there was no where to go but up, but to each their own. =P

Well, I've never painted a car, but I do a LOT of spray painting. And I can tell you that if someone who isn't good at spraypainting, spraypaints, its a disaster. Go out and get yourself a can of rusto, flat black, and go out back with a piece of cardboard, and practice painting that until you can get it with no imperfections. Then move up to your practice cars.

Heh, my nana used to spray paint EVERYTHING... And yeah, I did my fair share of it for her, it aint easy. Have you really added up the cost of the supplies including the sprayer rental, and how many days you're going to be needing it to do a project like this yourself? Make sure to take it all into account.

    Re: Painting a car

It will be in my garage because i can seal it off. The cars don't really need to much prep as far as body damage goes. I have have fans with filters so i can get fresh air coming in and garbage air out. I bought every tool i need to do the work years ago to do my race car and then just never did it. The sprayer is a apollo maxi- miser 5100 i believe but i haven't actually looked at it in a long time. If needed i will just go buy a new one.

The reason i have 2 practice cars is actually simple. My father has a 92 camaro he wants painted so i told him i wanted to paint mine and he said go ahead and do mine. If it comes out like crap i was going to have someone paint it anyway what's the difference if you do and then i take it to them. The second car is the female across the street from me with the same thing other than her mother was going to get it painted for her.

As for the glow in the dark part I'm turning my 99 z28 into a drag car. Personally i think it will look pretty sweet at the track with the front of the car glowing. Other than the passenger door where the sun down here beat the paint to shit the car is straight. There is 1 dent from a bb that a little bastard shot at it. I almost killed that little bastard.

Heres my plan like i said 99 z28 with a vortex body kit, lambo doors, and i haven't completely decided on the hood but leaning toward one that is louvered. The paint will be black over 3/4 of the car and the front will be a bright green or white stretching back to points. The white or green will have the powder to glow the rest will not.
