Can anyone predict what would happen without the "mandatory" SS? In 2 words, widespread hunger.. to those who can't work anymore.

You people, the ones sitting in front of a computer are much better off than a very large population of people we aren't used to seeing on a day to day basis. Some of these people literally believe that the best thing to do with money is to spend it all and spend it fast. Some people don't have a dime to their name that they've saved. They rely on an allowance. The SS does exactly that. It's kind of like trying to get off any other addiction like smoking or dipping. Saving money for the future is hard to do for those who lack the will power.

So what are we to do? Say screw em and let the weak die? Obviously we need some kind of mandatory system since people are in fact inherentely stupid, Right.

Though, y'all are right; the system needs to be restructured so the payout never runs out.
Natural Selection worked so far. Why stop it?

The "system" is Fine.........we just have to keep the Congress's hands OUT of the Soc Sec Fund !! They take the money spend it and NEVER replace it !! They just put an IOU in the fund.

So while the rich pay more, it is also a very very tiny burden on them where as the guy at McDonalds is having a huge amount of his gross income being taxed. If i managed to make any sense there
Once your annual income exceeds $102,000 you have paid all you pay into SSI. I agree with that system and do not think people earning a higher income should pay even more into the program. They are not going to get anymore out of it. We should have spent some of the $1,00912039123019384029384092384 dollars we just spent on figuring out who the dead beats are that can work but choose not to.

I don't claim to be an expert, but do you have some information of what the government has done with the Social Security money other than pay out benefits?

It stands to reason, that if everyone who is receiving benefits, had to have paid into the system, thus paying for themselves. Why should we ever be short funds to fund the SSI?

If there are any excess funds being given to those who havent paid into the system, then those funds should have come from somewhere's else. Not from the pool that was created by working taxpayers.

It was just a guess. I'm not a SSI expert by any stretch of the imagination.

Basically if I had to bet one way or the other, I'd bet that Congress did in fact use that money for other reasons, thinking they could pay it back later. First I heard of this was during the Bush administration, albeit I'm sure it may have gone on prior to that.
