Well, for the most part, police officers in the UK don't need firearms, because it's illegal to carry one around over here, so your average criminal won't carry one.
Because criminals obviously care about following the law.
Some do, depending on the degree of the crime they commit. Shoplifters don't carry guns over here (99.9% of the time). Is that true in America?

Most criminals in the UK don't carry guns because sentences get increased when a firearm is involved. Not to mention that simply carrying a firearm will get you a sentence over here. If you were going to commit a crime, would you take the risk of your gun being spotted before the crime even got started? (Purely hypothetically of course, I'm not suggesting anyone here is a criminal).

tick, you are right in that sense

but, when I was an exchange student over there, most people were surprised when I said that I owned multiple firearms and handguns.

this is because in England, not only is it illegal to by any means carry firearms in public but, it is almost impossible to buy them due to the heavy taxes, high cost, lack of importation, etc.

thus making it a rich man's hobby.

(the only popular form of fun shooting that I know of is clay pigeons)

and another thing, England even goes so far as to ban hunting (foxes) because some considered it a "Blood Sport" (facepalm)
