i guess it depends on the person.
For me money is great motivator, even right now. Hell the only reason i'm going to college (besides my parents would make me anyways) is because i know when i graduate and get some piece of paper i'm going to make more money then without it.
Shit i work harder at a job then i do school because my job paid me money, school didn't. I just got good enough grades to pass so i could get out in 4 years and go to college to learn what i actually care about (Business).
So for me, money is a huge motivation factor. Maybe for others it isn't *shrugs*. Just depends on their personality.
If you did put in a money for grades system it be best something like ( i think another person put something like this as well)
A-$5
B-$2
C-$-2
D $-5
F $-10
If they get all C's for say 5 classes, and don't have $10? Then they owe it to you once they have it, with interest. That way it punishes for doing bad AND teaches about being fiscally responsible (i.e. if you don't have 10 dollars, then you better not get an F or 2 D's or 5 C's, cuz its going to cost more in the long run)

Re: Report Cards ??
My parents didn't give me anything for getting good grades. I'm not sure if it is because I always got good grades (same with the others in my house) and didn't really need extra motivation or if it is just because they didn't want to pay. You could just put it to them this way: They can work hard now, get good grades, and go to a good college and maybe get paid more in the long run or they can be bums and live in a cardboard box. We all know that isn't how it really works, but your kids probably won't know the difference.
