*rant* Crazy Drivers vs Agriculture equiptment...

Well, today was on odd day to say the least....my town and its 1,345 citizens are well known to agriculture equiptment and the massive road space they consume, most people politely move out of the way and we all wave at each other acknowledging their kind act for us to continue to do our jobs quickly and hassle free.

Anyway, im chuggin down the road (approx 6pm, on DST its dark already)....this is a key element here) in my outfit (see previous post titled "my formal introduction") Tractor weighs 16tons, fall tillage tool weioghs approximately another 5-6tons, overall lets say 22tons (thats 44,000lbs for those who don't know :P).

So here comes a car, with the way the ditches are configured on this road, the side im coming down on is a deep district drainage ditch (approx. 20ft deep)...and has about 3ft of shoulder before my outer duals are just floating in air having no contact with the ground, and if i go over to far, you'd bet your ass my mulch finisher would drag my tractor down into the ditch as well...and thats a nice insurance claim of around $150K, lol.

So she's coming down the road and has an easy 5ft of shoulder to get off the road near/if not completely off the road and all me to pass, im only 20ft away from her so it'd take me like 5 seconds to get to her....but nope, she decides to "chance" it and vs me in a joust for the road right of way apparently....well, she made it past my tractor fine, i guess she thought she was fine, but she didn't see the extension section of the mulch finisher, nor did she see the 2 60W HID warning lights, which are clearly visible for 1/2mi if not more....

Needless to say, she ripped her front 1/4 panel off, her mirror, and has a huge, i mean huge damage to her drivers side....she slammed on her brakes, i cruised down the road to get to a field entrance where i could pull over safely off the roadway...she called the cops, etc, etc.

cop arrives, asks me what happened, tells me to stay put goes and asks her what happened...comes back, asks me to turn on all of my caution amber lights....i turn em on, all 10 of them start flashing...he checks my SMV (slow moving vehicle sign) even though its mounted to tell traffic coming up on me that im slow, its the new revision of it...he asks me how far i was off the road, i go to where the accident happened, i show him where my tire marks were, and where her's were, i kindl explain to him what happened and how i couldn't get off the road as much as i usually like to, due to a 20ft drop awaiting me if i did try to get over more....he comes back again about 20minutes later....says have a g'night, im not at fault. I ask if he needs any insurance info, my drivers license, etc. he looks at me and says...."kid, i know you didn't cause it, its not like your tractor has an actual road insurance policy together, and she admitted she was robably at fault....so just keep doin your job".

Cliff notes for those of yuo who don't like to read:

lady wouldn't get over, i had no room to get over in my tractor, ended up side swiping the living hell out of her car, got off scotch free.

I would have to say, if i were in old age, and knew "my time" was coming soon....i would probably go crazy with my tractor as well.

I suggest you get som experience driving one first though, Powershifts/IVT's (infinately variable transmissions) are the easy ones to control, then you have the 24spd power-sync (only true manual tranny john deere makes anymore for large ag tractors).

Then you have to get used to the idea that a 4wd tractor literally goes wherever it wants to on the road....doesn't matter how tight and straight you hold the wheel, your gonna be weavin around like a drunkard, when your reaching the top speed at approx. 21.8mph or so...nothing you can do either, its what happens with center hinge trators.
