Generally when someone enters your house unwanted with you present, it is safe to assume they are not there to burglar but to do worse.

Burglars usually break into cars and unoccupied homes.

You can't just kill someone for breaking in, for the most part. They have to be threatening your life, which like Coors said, if they are in your house they are probably not there to make friends and have tea...

Since you live in England, do you know how much the violent crime rates went up when guns were outlawed there? I bet you have no idea...

Actually, in states with the "Castle Doctrine" you can kill someone that intrudes in your house without knowing their intent. The fact that they entered unwanted means law entitles you to assume you they are there to do you harm.

If it turns out it was someone you knew before hand and picked a fight, then that might not stand up in court, but if someone you have no previous connection to enters your home unwanted, its nearly certain you will not be charged with anything.

Texas, AZ, Colorado are three states I know offhand that have that, I think there are about a dozen or so others. The others have weaker versions that do require the homeowner to prove intent to harm, or require retreat if possible.

In Florida you can use Deadly Force............anytime/anywhere you feel threatened ! I did last week and was not arrested for brandishing my gun on my property.

The people that were threatening me on my property were charged with trespassing. Needless to say I didn't need to Shoot dammit !

Add Florida to that list...and as for the religious comment, there are such a things as righteous kills.
