TWELVE bodies bearing the marks of torture and dumped beside a highway in Mexico were federal agents fighting drug gangs, authorities say.
The grisly scene near the mountain town of La Huacana, in the southwest state of Michoacan, represented one of the most chilling escalations of the bloody war led by Mexican President Felipe Calderon's against the cartels, who are also fighting each other.
The 11 men and one woman were off duty when they were ambushed and abducted by the La Familia drug cartel, Mexico's national security spokesman, Monte Alejandro Rubido said.
It is believed the agents were killed over the weekend in retaliation over the arrest of alleged La Familia chief of operations Arnoldo Rueda Medina, the Associated Press reported.
"This marks an important change in the drug war in that they are attacking federal forces directly,'' said Jorge Chabat, a Mexican drug expert told AP.
"It also suggests the capture of this person has affected the operations of the cartel. It was a major blow and this is a reaction out of weakness not strength.''
Mr Calderon denounced the "cowardly attacks'' and called the victims "true heroes who have sacrificed their lives for the peace of Mexican families all over the country''.
"The criminals will not be able to intimidate the Federal Government,'' Mr Calderon said.
"In this battle we will not give up, we will not hesitate, because what is at stake is Mexico's peace and safe.''
The escalation of violence over 48-hour period has seen 30 people killed including a mayor in northern Mexico.
Hector Ariel Meixueiro, who was mayor of Namiquipa in northwestern Chihuahua state near the US border, was shot multiple times after being accosted by at least 15 men carrying assault rifles.
Besides the showdown with law enforcement agencies, rival gangs involved in Mexico's $40 billion-a-year drug trade are battling each other for cocaine smuggling routes running up from Central America into the world's top drug consumer, the US.
US authorities worry the violence will spill over the US-Mexico border and have pledged $1.4 billion ($A1.8 billion) in aid to help Mexico combat the cartels.
More than 7700 people have been killed in drug violence in Mexico since 2008, according to government figures.

This is just said. That people would do this over one person running an illegal operation.
Edit: Fixed the title.
