    found this about the amish

    http://www.amish.net/faq.asp
The Amish use local doctors, dentists, eye doctors, etc., and will go to specialists and hospitals as needed. They make use of advances in health care that are used in hospitals, etc. They generally try home remedies for ailments first before going to a doctor or the hospital. They also are inclined to go to Mexico for major treatments because of the cost of medications. [Editor's note: The Amish do not participate in medical or insurance plans and instead pay for all medical costs themselves.] The children do get immunizations (although not all may do so just as not all Englishers may do so either). Answer coordinated by THE BUDGET.

Do you have media to post or link? This isn't a hot-button issue in Michigan, or at least I've never heard of it.
Well we have the link from this thread, and my mom and dad said they saw it on 2 different news channels. I've never once seen an article nor a tv news story about the Amish child neglect. So either it never happend or it wasnt deemed big enough for tv news at the time.
Where's the link from this thread? I looked through all three pages and didn't see a link to a story about an Amishman that let his kid die with impunity.
I never said that there was a legal case or any action taken against the Amish. That is what I was trying to bring up. Why haven't they been looked at more closely if some of the more hardcore members refuse to use modern medical practices due to their religious beliefs?

Recently, more and more members of the Amish community are starting to use modern genetics and medical practices to deal with the high incidences of genetic disorders found in that community. Yet they continue to join in marriages with close relatives knowing that their children are likely to suffer from a genetic disorder--many of them highly hazardous to the child's health. Many also choose not to undergo tests which could determine if an unborn child will have the disorder, something that could lead to the infant's death shortly after birth if proper care is not received.

To me, when parents know that their unborn child may have a genetic disorder that could result in death if not treated shortly after birth, and still choose not to undergo testing during pregnancy, that is a reckless choice. Am I saying that this testing will prevent that child from suffering the symptoms of a rare genetic disorder? No, but it may give them a chance at life.
