An Afghan bill permitting a husband to starve his wife if she refuses to have sex has become law as the country's president, Hamid Karzai, looks to seal victory in this Thursday's election.

The bill sparked international outrage when it was first introduced earlier this year, forcing Mr Karzai to back down.

But critics say the amended version of the law, brought into effect on July 27, remains highly repressive.

They accuse Mr Karzai of selling out Afghan women for the sake of conservative Shia support ahead of the presidential vote.

The law governs family life for Afghanistan's Shia minority, which make up about 15 per cent of the 30million population.

It allows a husband to withhold food from his wife if she refuses to submit to his sexual demands.

In the original version, Shia women were ordered to have sex with their husbands every four days.

It also removed the need for consent to sex within marriage, effectively condoning marital rape.

Now in the amended version of the same bill, a wife must also get her husband's permission to work. Fathers and grandfathers have also been awarded exclusive custody of the children.

The bill was passed quietly with the apparent approval of Mr Karzai.

We can't.
It is simply not possible for the Americans or the coalition or whoever to change their culture in a few years.
The more we try the more they will resist and the more recruits Terry and the rest will get.
But according to some people, we can't judge them because all cultural values are relative and its' racist to impose your values on another or to judge your culture to be superior.

I say fuck that.
I am reasonably sure I will not be banned here for saying Western culture, with all it's faults, is far superior to ME/ extremist Muslim culture.

I feel bad for those people too.
But if we are gonna spend trillions and fuck up somebody else's country in order to make their lives better....................why not start with Mexico ?

I would use the term prejudiced as opposed to racist...since it's their culture we're debating here, not their race.

This sucks and there's nothing we can really do about it...

That is there culture, that is how they live. In there eye's, it is okay. Just like they view us as arrogant and sloppy for the average 15 year old to weigh over 100 pounds. For the average person to consume more fast food bullshit then the world combined. It's just like Canadians view us at loud and rude. Fuck people, we are. We don't know everything, who are we to judge how someone else has lived for how long? O yea, there county is way the hell older then ours.....Let's not try to change something that honestly no one cares about.
