Re: Seeking information on the IT field
I'm not sure how to sign up on them... I was recruited to continue contracts with them after doing something with EA and I don't really remember how it all happened to be honest.
I'm sure you can find something on the site though. I'll look around when I get some free time here. I think I might be still registered...

Re: Seeking information on the IT field
I am sure I do not have NEARLY the technical skill to compete with others in my age group who have been doing this for longer. I just BARELY was able to put together my own computer....much less install all the software and drivers.

Get a buddy with similar skills to bring along for some of the contracts and you'll have a good time.

Re: Seeking information on the IT field
Or you could switch you major and get a bachelor in Pre Law, and then go to work in the IT field like me doing database and application dev
Skills set are generally more important that the specific degree (at least it was in my case) as my degree and formal education has nothing to do with what I am doing now.
My brother on the other hand, got Bach/Mast in DIS (Decision Information Science from UF), worked as a programmer for a few years and decided it wasn't his cup of tea, and decided to go to Law School. Graduated from Law School (UM, Florida) a year ago and is working with a firm in Coral Gables.

Re: Seeking information on the IT field
The degree from rutgers requires at least 150 hours of internship time. There are also a lot of opportunities on campus for computer work like this. Hmmm....My mind is a swirl of transient thoughts...cascading into a river of creative alternatives.
This wont be the only interaction I am sure, but you have to start somewhere right?
Laggy! Aren't you in the IT field as well? What say you? I would like as many different inputs as possible.
My thanks to all of you in your suggestions for my possible future majorCode:____ U ___ u _____ U _____ u __ __ ____ _ __ _ _ U _____ u U| _"\ u \/"_ \/|_ " _| \| ___"|/U|' \/ '|uU| _"\ u|"|/ / ___ | \ |"| \| ___"|/ \| |_) |/ | | | | | | | _|" \| |\/| |/\| |_) |/| ' / |_"_| <| \| |> | _|" | __/.-,_| |_| | /| |\ | |___ | | | | | __/U/| . \\u | | U| |\ |u | |___ |_| \_)-\___/ u |_|U |_____| |_| |_| |_| |_|\_\ U/| |\u |_| \_| |_____| ||>>_ \\ _// \\_ << >> <<,-,,-. ||>>_ ,-,>> \\,-.-,_|___|_,-.|| \\,-.<< >> (__)__) (__) (__) (__)(__) (__) (./ \.) Pote, I know a guy who's going to be a great physicist. He's taking Calc 2 again for the uh...severalth time. A lot of the classes are going to be hard. The best question to ask is: Do you still enjoy your major? If yes, then toughing it out, going in to see your profs for help, and seeking tutoring are the key. If not, then do make the change.
enf-Jesus its been like 12 minutes and you're already worried about stats?! :-P
Bigdog-Sweet home Alabama you are an idiot.

So I'm curious, have you made up your mind yet or at least looked into it more?
I can tell you degrees don't necessarily mean as much as experience does, but it doesn't hurt. Just depends on what you want to do really and what you skill sets are.
There are a wide range of "IT" degrees out there. Mine is considered Computer Information Systems and the highest math I need is College Algebra. We get a lot of exposure to a lot of the basics and we can choose what we really want to specialize in: programming, web development, networking, and database management are our main aspects right now. We are trying to get some more Unix/Linux based classes. Unix/Linux is a great career option if you can get the hang of it.
The best way to figure out what you want to do is just try to do of the things yourself and see what you enjoy doing. Sometimes it is hard though if you enjoy doing a number of tasks. I enjoy many aspects of the IT field so I have yet to decide what I want to focus in, but I'm leaning towards a Unix/Linux administrator. I won't know for sure though until I start getting some more internships in and first hand exposure.
That would be my best guess for you. Try to find people you know or get to know them and ask around and try to get a feel for what you want to do. You are very bright as we can all tell by how you write and act on the forums here, so it is just a matter of finding what you want and enjoy doing.

Re: Seeking information on the IT field
Well I have pretty much decided that I am indeed going to persue something in the IT field. The program of study in Rutgers is called ITI, Information Technologies and Informatics. From my conversations with the head of the dept. he says that there are a VAST amount of possibilities within the field like you said keiron. The more specialized my interest, the better off I would be in the long run. I am not exactly sure what informatics is, other than the dissemination of information. The head guy, thinks that ITI major with a comp sci minor is a killer combination in the field. Apparently the only math I need is computer type math which is according to the head guy in the dept. mainly geometry based. We shall see what comes of it but I am indeed going to pursue it and I am sure I will be hitting many of you guys up for help/advice later down the road.
Other ideas/suggestions are most welcome. I was contemplating going with database or web design as a concentration, but the door is wide open for other possibilities. For all I know, there is an aspect within the field that I am completely unaware of that I may love.Code:____ U ___ u _____ U _____ u __ __ ____ _ __ _ _ U _____ u U| _"\ u \/"_ \/|_ " _| \| ___"|/U|' \/ '|uU| _"\ u|"|/ / ___ | \ |"| \| ___"|/ \| |_) |/ | | | | | | | _|" \| |\/| |/\| |_) |/| ' / |_"_| <| \| |> | _|" | __/.-,_| |_| | /| |\ | |___ | | | | | __/U/| . \\u | | U| |\ |u | |___ |_| \_)-\___/ u |_|U |_____| |_| |_| |_| |_|\_\ U/| |\u |_| \_| |_____| ||>>_ \\ _// \\_ << >> <<,-,,-. ||>>_ ,-,>> \\,-.-,_|___|_,-.|| \\,-.<< >> (__)__) (__) (__) (__)(__) (__) (./ \.) Re: Seeking information on the IT field
Take my advice on this one ........
If you plan to go into the networking scheme of things.........
Leave the cisco stuff alone and go with juniper.
all of the state contracts here in SC are moving to juniper. It would be safe to assume that the certifications for juniper are along the same line as the cisco ones but i personally think juniper is slowly pulling ahead ....

Yeah, I am looking for a job in this kind of stuff myself right now. Have a friend from a class that is gonna be talking to his boss about getting me an interview since his workplace on Fort Sam is looking for a weekends worker at a real damn fine pay with hours and benefits.
Sucks when you old job for a small company owned by your father has to downsize from the 4 man crew to the 2 man. But at least I can have leeway in time in getting a new job.
