ANKARA SAYS MISSILE PURCHASE PLANS NOT YET FINALIZED: Turkey's defense industry authorities are considering a proposal from the United States to sell Ankara Patriot Advance Capability-3 (PAC-3) antimissile batteries and related equipment in a $7.8 billion arms deal, the Secretariat-General of the Defense Ministry announced yesterday. The Pentagon's Defense Security Cooperation Agency said in a notice made public on Friday that the sale would include 13 Patriot "fire units," 72 PAC-3 missiles and a range of associated hardware for ground-based air defense. The Secretariat-General of the Defense Ministry said in a statement that the planned purchase was part of a Turkey's ongoing international tender to acquire long-range air and missile-defense systems. It noted that letters requesting proposals have already been sent to US companies Lockheed Martin and Raytheon, The China National Precision Machinery Import and Export Corporation (CPMIEC) and Russia's Rosoboronexport.
A letter of request has been separately sent to the US administration since possible purchase of long-range missiles from the US will take place under the Foreign Military Sales credits, the statement said, emphasizing that the Friday's announcement was part of the procedure for US companies to compete for Turkey's tender, which requires defense companies to obtain preliminary approval from the government to sell weapons to other countries. The Undersecretariat for the Defense Industry, which is in charge of the multibillion-dollar tender, will assess the proposals and make its final decision regarding the purchase after competing its assessment, said the statement.
