Pretty much what syrringe said. Play your premium hands only. AA AK AQ KK QQ AJ JJ KQ QJ. Suited connectors have the potential to be big money hands. On average 89 suited will take down AA. IF you decide to enter a pot, be sure you are raising, do not limp under any circumstances. A standard raise is 3-4 times the big blind, then pot bets on the flop and turn. ON the river if you have a made hand, bet 2.5 times the pot if not facing a raise already. IF you are confident you have the other guy beat, move all in and watch him squirm.

Also, for your first hour or two at the table do not talk to anyone. If someone says nice hand, just say thanks. Dont react to the flop at all when you fold, it pretty much tells the players in the hand whats already been folded and makes it easier to make a call or a bluff for them. Act like you have played before. I know its gonna be hard to not shake when you are putting chips in the middle, especially when you have a monster hand, but try to limit all body language as possible. From my experience if a guy is sitting back in his chair after a bet, hes confident that he has the best hand and he usually does. Sitting up straight and attentive at the table after a bet is usually a good sign of a bluff, in this case even if you dont have a hand move all in and the guy will fold 99% of the time. Since it is your birthday, Im assuming you will be drinking, usually I advise against this while playing poker because it leads to irrational decisions, and overall bad play by you. If you do decide to have a drink while you are playing, do so in moderation and wait untill you are out of the tournament to hit it hard.

Since you are playing in a tournament, if you make the money in any way shape or form, be sure to tip the dealers. Its good practice and is pretty much a common courtesy amongst all poker players.

And remember above all else, have fun. Its a game and is meant to be fun.

the only tell I can say would be how fast they bet. If someone throws a big raise and they already have their chips in their hand around the table to throw down... they have good cards. My best hand to beat people without them ever realizing it was a possibility is a flush. They almost always try and figure out.. does he have the ace? or the jack? Naw nucca I gots the FLUSH.. just make sure they cant beat it with whats out there.

dont be sore if you lose your money. Have fun. Know when to fold. Know when to make the pot a lil richer each time betting comes around without telling people you got AA.

    Re: Poker players?

granted this was from a game, not RL experience so someone can school me on it, but when playing with non-pros, reading them isn't the easiest thing to do as at least some will have no strategy or way they play. They might be stingy on a KQ and go all in or a 2-7 (for a lazy example)
