It is overwhelmingly accepted that torture is wrong.

Very true, if you ask a large group of people, the majority of the people will say it is morally wrong so it makes sense that it is overwhelmingly accepted as wrong.

As for the case by case basis, If the large group of people each had 5 year old daughters that were raped, I'm sure they would want to and would in fact torture the man responsible if they had the chance. If they thought it was morally wrong, why would they do it?
That is my point you simply can't say it's wrong. You can say in your opinion it is wrong but there will always be those circumstances where a persons morality on it can change. I can say imo that everyone has a point on to where they would cave on how they feel about it but i don 't think it would change them for life just the situation at hand. We can all agree it's against the lawbut that but doesn't change the fact it is going to happen. Just like it always has regardless of how many laws are in place.

"caving" isn't changing your morality, it's going against it for some other reason, like survival ( see George Soros)
Morality isn't part of pop culture, changing and reforming all the time, it is a constant, or its' supposed to be.
But morality is closely linked to religion and we as a society have rejected religion as a guidline for morality so now it is make it up as you go.
