Geocities is dead

I had a Geocities page once. I think anyone that had a computer and internet in the 90's at one point had one.

mhmm weird. my page is still up, but now it says yahoo instead of geocities!? so i don't think they're actually gonna shut those websites down, but just pass them on to yahoo

I'd agree. I know a lot of people who made them just to try it out or say they had one. That is what got me started in webpage design and coding. I'm no expert and not majoring in it really, but it is good background info to have.

Yea no doubt. Geocities is what got me interested in html as well. Opened up notepad and started to learn. Man those were the days.....

On a related note, I miss FTP....

Can you imagine how much junk they had stored on those old drives?

I had something like ~15-20 sites on there from various web design classes in high school and messing around on my own time.

I know right? I remember making Diablo webpages and all sorts of useless junk..

I am glad they are trying to store it. Though it seems like utter crap to us now, think how awesome it will be in 50 or 100 years. You don't get history like that often. It would be like having the first 10 years of documents from the printing press.

A really cool bit of history.
