I wouldn't call him a terrorist and I never did. I would call him a Muslim extremist who committed an atrocious mass murder in the name of his god and religion. If he had links to Al'Qaeda (spelling correct?) then I would call him a terrorist, but that hasn't been confirmed. For example, if someone had firebombed an abortion clinic, and the news reported that they were a devout Christian fundamentalist, and someone said "Why am I not surprised to see a Christian do this?" Would you have been mad? I really doubt it.

Religion means nothing...it is merely the provided justification for murder in either case. Both of the above examples are terrorism.

the thing is that would not be defined as an act of terrorism still

i don't think anyone is denying that this guy was at least partially motivated by religious/racial hatred... but a muslim killing non-muslims is not automatically terrorism.

terrorism's aim is to do more damage to a people than is actually caused by the attack itself. for instance 9/11 hurt our economy, confidence in travel, and a lot of fear. this is what sets terrorism apart from attacks in anger. i think it would be hard to argue that this shooter did this with the intent of instilling fear into the public at large
