Nelson Mandela to fade away? Who's to fill his shoes?

    http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/09/wo...r=2&ref=africa

“It’s the idea of Nelson Mandela that remains the glue that binds South Africa together,” said Mondli Makhanya, editor in chief of The Sunday Times. “The older he grows, the more fragile he becomes, the closer the inevitable becomes, we all fear that moment. There’s the love of the man, but there’s also the question: Who will bind us?”
I understand that most of you could care less about what's happening in South Africa with all the troubles our own country is facing at this time, but I would hope that a few of you would realize that the troubles South Africa has faced over the past twenty years vastly outweigh our own by a great deal, and would have some kind of insight or comment about this unfortunate situation. Nelson Mandela is a great man, and, as one travelling to Africa within the next few months, I must admit I'm a little concerned as to what will happen if he passes away from us before or while we're there.

Anyway, just wanted to throw this out there for discussion, as I've yet to see anyone mention Mandela's impending passing at all, regardless of what he's done for South Africa, even if most of that "doing" involved sitting in a cell for 27 years writing letters to his family and friends.

Anyway, discuss. Or don't, and let this thread get buried below things like how to properly eat chicken wings or the merits and shortcomings of various NFL teams.

Whose to say it won't try to come back, once he's gone?

How could it? Please sketch out a plausible scenario where it could and while the world just watches and does nothing.

Listen, Mandela's passing will be a sad day indeed but the world will go on. Everyone has their time. He had his.

I'm just trying to understand how us having a dialog about his imminent passing changes anything. Sure I think it would be just dandy if South Africa would stop being so messed up. I'm just not holding my breath.

Trigger here's an idea why don't you fuck off out of the thread if you don't care?

    Tick.

I've been following the South Africa stories for a while now. What I'm most concerned of is of course you and your brother being there when he passes. I could definitely see some turmoil resulting from that. I really doubt apartheid could return in South Africa, but who knows.
