Interacting with other people in this common goal and seeing family, friends, and others all around their area do the same is a great feeling that shows a brighter side of humanity and binds the real world community. The main problem I see with online churches is that they lack much of not only that personal and sensory environment which makes church special, but also that bringing together in good-will of an actual tangible community of a neighborhood, town, what have you- the people you see outside of church as you go about your day to day life. I think not having these key elements would make online church, or any church missing them for that matter, a lot less meaningful, so they won't explode in popularity despite the convenience...though some folks who are lazy or have an absolute necessity to will probably use them anyway.
