Now new products can be designed with out step down transformers and just plug into these new outlets. So many electronics dont need 110.

Great for my wife's USB recharged Sansa MP3/4 player.

I have often wondered why someone doesn't make a plug that has these and a cable cat5 outlet in one.

Isn't 3.0 still awhile away? I thought Intel wasn't going to start adding 3.0 until 2011.

I do want a one of these in out restroom. We are always battling for the charger since a radio is plugged in the other one. This will fix that.
    [edit] Availability
Consumer products are expected to become available in 2010.[50] Commercial controllers are expected to enter into volume production no later than the first quarter of 2010.[51] NEC is aiming to produce its first USB 3.0 controller in June 2009, initially priced at US$15.00. Monthly production of NEC Electronics' µPD720200 host controller is expected to reach approximately 1,000,000 units in September 2009.[52] On September 24, 2009 Freecom announced a USB 3.0 external hard drive.[53]

On October 27th, 2009 Gigabyte announced 7 new P55 chipsets motherboards that included onboard USB 3.0, SATA 6Gb/s and triple power to all USB ports.[54]

On October 29, 2009 Asus announced the November release of their first USB 3.0 motherboard, the "P7P55D-E Premium", as well as a PCI-Express x1 add-on card for existing motherboards to provide USB 3.0 and SATA 6Gbps support [55].

Drivers are under development for Windows 7, but support will not be included with the initial release of the operating system[56]. The Linux kernel has supported USB 3.0 since version 2.6.31, which was released in September 2009.[57][58][59]

At least one complete end-to-end test system for USB3 designers is now on the market.[60]

Intel will not support USB 3 until 2011[61], which will slow down mainstream adoption. These delays may be due to problems in the CMOS manufacturing process[62], a focus to advance the Nehalem platform [63] or a tactic by Intel to boost its upcoming Light Peak interface[64]. Current AMD roadmaps indicate, that the new southbridges released in the beginning of 2010 will not support USB 3[65]. Market researcher In-Stat does not predict a relevant market share of USB 3 until 2011[66].

Just because Intel won't do it doesn't mean other people are.
But now that I think about it it doesn't really matter for power anyways. This is just for power and 2.0 and 3.0 have the same power pins and are the same size so it should work for a 3.0 device also.

Well... it appears the power specs are different between 2.0 and 3.0. They may use the same pins, but the problem will be a USB 3.0 device may not be able to draw enough power from a 2.0 port...

    From the Wiki article:
The bus power spec has been increased so that a unit load is 150 mA (+50% over minimum using USB 2.0). An unconfigured device can still draw only 1 unit load, but a configured device can draw up to 6 unit loads (900 mA, an 80% increase over USB 2.0 at a registered maximum of 500 mA). Minimum device operating voltage is dropped from 4.4 V to 4 V.

It'll be able to power somethings and maybe not somethings. Now, say you just want to charge your phone through 3.0 in a 2.0 port. It'll charge, just a lot slower. But the way technology works, it'll be awhile before phones start coming with 3.0 plugs. And since Intel refuses to go with the latest and greatest, it's holding back the market.

Pardon my idiocy but how is that useful?
many portable devices can be powered/charged by USB ports, MP3 players, Cellphones, and so on. To power them you had to have your computer on. with these there is no need to turn on your computer. also if you lost your normal ac adapter and you have a usb adapter you are not sol
I no longer have a wall charger for my blackberry, I only charge off the PC. One of these would rock.

For my company's purposes, it's intended to help our customers cut wiring costs in already built sites, and is supposedly more secure/dependable than wireless which is our traditional method of networking our devices.

I'm not in my office so I can't link anything about it, but if I remember later I will.

There is talk of electrical companies offering internet service via PoE in the future.

What he is talking about is this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_line_communication

The link you posted would only allow DC power. And we still have alot of equipment that needs the 110 VAC to run.
