or you can get a lock with a keypad and skip the key altogether...

My folks lock the door, too. As I see it, if they are going to break in then a little lock isn't going to stop them. Locking it will only cause damage to the door. Besides, at least one person in my house is always up. We don't really have to worry about surprises.
