Lifehacker's Best of 2009
Dunno how many of you read Lifehacker regularly, but it's a great resource for DIY projects, new tech advancements, and geek culture in general. Recently they've been putting out Best of 2009 Top 10 lists of various tricks, tips, apps, and projects, which should provide any self-respecting geek with plenty to do during the next few winter months. Which definition of the word hack applies to Lifehacker.com? I've always been confused by this.

I have heard that "hack" was used by early programmers to mean something like "to manipulate something inventively to get it working in a way that it couldn't before." Apparently, the old hands got annoyed that "hack" was later turned into a word to mean to negatively impact a system by accessing it's vulnerabilities. I do not see the definition of the first in Merriam-Webster, but I think that it's the one that lifehacker is using.
