Say all you want... but it depends on what generation you grew up in. So its all what your used to. Well... imo.

    New Rock < Old Rock

    New Metal > Old "Metal"

Re: Old Rock vs New Rock

I certainly love the progression that metal has taken. There are so many different types of metal that have evolved from basic rock.

This is one of my favorites, it isn't as brutal as the stuff I like now, but it definitely has its charm. This is another something I like to call a "gateway band." Protest the Hero led me into a lot of heavier stuff. To me, it is a progression of talent because I love the fast and precise music. Now that doesn't mean that just because it's fast means it takes talent. I could play a song that required me to just wail on the double bass all day and do nothing else.. Let me find an example.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQtEdwixprI

The song is fast and heavier and the drummer is using some quick work with this feet, but it doesn't sound as skillful as something from Chad Sexton. He always is a great drummer to listen to with his unique fills and rhythm.

Yeah it is hard to really rate music, that's why I go from talent. Sure you could say the more popular band is "better" because more people love their sound, but then I remember that people are stupid and generally have no idea what they want. Most of the popular main stream artists have very simple music. I am sure these artists could really go off in a solo if they wanted to. It is a lot harder, in my opinion, to take a set sheet of music and then innovate based on that. With a solo you can really do whatever you wanted and people will awe at the sight, but being able to fit it in a fill or turn a regular chord progression into a solo-esque sound takes a lot more out of said artist. I digress.

I think I understand what Kraker was trying to say when he posted the pictures of the amps. Technology definitely makes the music sound a lot better, but it shouldn't help someone play better. The way I say it, classic rock paved the way to the music I love today so I definitely have loads of respect for it... but I would never listen to it.

I listen to a lot of different genres of music.

EDM, Classical, Alternative, Big Band/Swing, Rockabilly.....the list goes on.

I hate country music and don't like most most rap..except the Beastie Boys

....in the end, different music means different things to different people.

Let people listen to what they want...for fucks sake.

Anyways, this debate can go round and round. I grew up on classic rock and blues. I appreciate every ounce of it, mainly for the feeling it takes to play. While shredding metal and hard rock is always fun and requires great precision, playing with feeling is a completely different kind of talent and takes years to master.

Personally, nothing is better than The Rolling Stones. Keith Richards is just absolutely incredible and has such an original style that many continue to try and replicate to this date. But trust me that if all guitarists could play like Jimmy Page, they would... if all singers could sing like Robert Plant, they would. Those are two men with incredible talents that found one another and made some of the greatest music of all time. Let's not forget about bands like Deep Purple, Rush, Santana, Bad Company, CCR, The Animals, The Doors... all bands that will live on forever... some of them had songs fairly easy to play, yet were held heavily on the vocals side, while others had great musicianship.

That doesn't mean modern rock will not pass the test of time. People thought the same about Pearl Jam, STP, Nirvana, and other grunge bands, but they are still getting radio play. Only time will tell. These young kids will eventually get older.
No, I am saying old rock used a Les Paul and a marshall, and made some of the greatest music of all time...New rock uses...well, what is the X factor in those pictures? Everything is doctored up these days, nothing is pure and raw....everything is synthizied and washed around til it sounds like shit...

And I belive Nirvana has stood the test of time man. Kurt Cobain is hailed as one of rocks most influentury (sp) artist of all time. Granted, there were alot of other GREAT grunge bands (see Hype) but nirvana was the poster child, and single handly killed 80's hair bands, and knocked Michael Jackson off the top of the charts......and it was epic...
