Re: Old Rock vs New Rock
I certainly love the progression that metal has taken. There are so many different types of metal that have evolved from basic rock.

This is one of my favorites, it isn't as brutal as the stuff I like now, but it definitely has its charm. This is another something I like to call a "gateway band." Protest the Hero led me into a lot of heavier stuff. To me, it is a progression of talent because I love the fast and precise music. Now that doesn't mean that just because it's fast means it takes talent. I could play a song that required me to just wail on the double bass all day and do nothing else.. Let me find an example.

The song is fast and heavier and the drummer is using some quick work with this feet, but it doesn't sound as skillful as something from Chad Sexton. He always is a great drummer to listen to with his unique fills and rhythm.
Yeah it is hard to really rate music, that's why I go from talent. Sure you could say the more popular band is "better" because more people love their sound, but then I remember that people are stupid and generally have no idea what they want. Most of the popular main stream artists have very simple music. I am sure these artists could really go off in a solo if they wanted to. It is a lot harder, in my opinion, to take a set sheet of music and then innovate based on that. With a solo you can really do whatever you wanted and people will awe at the sight, but being able to fit it in a fill or turn a regular chord progression into a solo-esque sound takes a lot more out of said artist. I digress.
I think I understand what Kraker was trying to say when he posted the pictures of the amps. Technology definitely makes the music sound a lot better, but it shouldn't help someone play better. The way I say it, classic rock paved the way to the music I love today so I definitely have loads of respect for it... but I would never listen to it.

Re: Old Rock vs New Rock
I listen to a lot of different genres of music.
EDM, Classical, Alternative, Big Band/Swing, Rockabilly.....the list goes on.
I hate country music and don't like most most rap..except the Beastie Boys

....in the end, different music means different things to different people.
Let people listen to what they want...for fucks sake.
