    Re: Toyota Recall

I did not see it mentioned but what happens when you put the car in neutral? That is the first thing I would do if my accelerator got stuck. I am not saying that Toyota is still not on the hook for these accidents but anyone that has the time to call 911 has the time to try many other options. What the hell is a 911 operator going to do? I am not trying to be insensitive to the family that got killed in the accident and my comments are more aimed to educate a reader then they are to call out the crash victim but damn.

    Gas pedal stuck:

Step 1 - Hit the brake (Nothing)
Step 2 - Put the car in neutral and pull up the parking brake keeping in mind not to lock it
Step 3 - Turn the key off but not all the way off so that the steering wheel locks
Step 4 - Back to the on position but do not start and try the brake again
Step 5 - Call Toyota once we are stopped instead of 911

You could get 1-4 done before the car got to 100 if you were doing the speed limit. All of those things should be second nature to a driver in my opinion.

I did not read the whole thread, others are on the same lines. Hell I came up with my list on my own. I still say this should be second nature to a driver.

Not if it is one of the newer Toyota models. Some of the models, like the Prius, are completely computerized. So there is no guarantee of putting it in neutral. As well as the key being bluetooth, w/ a power button.

Otherwise, I completely agree with you.

I can't imagine myself in a Prius so I am good to go LOL. They need to start building cars with an EPO switch and an anchor.

Well one of the problems with the new Prius's is that they wont go into neutral going over about 55mph I believe. This is a supposed "Safety Feature" to protect the transmission... :5 So right there you got problem #1. Problem #2 is that a lot of the newer cars are drive by wire, no throttle cable. If something sticks in the engine bay hope your passenger is a gymanst cause he's gotta go fix it up front while your doing 120! :8 So these are some of the problems that I have heard from a mechanic or two about these 'yota's but I have no proof to back it up so let me know if somethings flawed so I can correct the mechanic...

But I definitely love having my 1976 BMW. All mechanical everything. Nothing to really go wrong!

Yeah they are drive by wire. Which works great in a jet but not so much on the ground. It's one thing to have a malfunction when you have 2 back up systems and no traffic then in a car where you have to stay on the road with out killing yourself or someone else. I thought they already learned some of this stuff when the first 2 cars that heads up displays were complete failures.

I wonder if I can use this as an excuse next time I get pulled over for speeding?
