just to throw out another perspective...

my friends and i make a webcomic. we want people to see it and share it with everyone they know. but, if someone uses our webcomic and tries to make money off it without our permission, that's wrong. we worked hard on the art and have the rights to it.

here's an example of another webcomic dude who's stuff got jacked:

Basically it comes down to...

He Owns the picture and wants a price for your useage.

You either pay that price (which seems steep to me) OR you simply find another picture to use, of which there has to be thousands out there to chose from. Someone else may have a price you are more comfortable with.
