I heard that that was exactly what our government wanted our people to think so when Japan got news that their balloons were successful then they would have started sending them with nukes. I heard they stopped sending them because they assumed they weren't making it over here since the US was keeping it hush hush. I heard this from a co-worker who's from Hawaii. I suppose he could be making it up, though I wouldn't know why...
The Japanese never had nukes......and still don't. I have a feeling he is pulling your tit...
They were more interested in a radio wave "death-ray". Which, at the time a few countries were working on it. All of which lead to other things such as RADAR and the magnetron(Microwave). They just kept working on the "death-ray".

I wonder how that worked out for them?

Well, apparently a lot of the local old timers gather there to hang out or whatever. Well, this was about 4 years ago when my girl and I paid the grandparents a visit. We went to Dairy Queen for a late lunch. When we sat down to eat some folks that my grandpa knew came over and started visiting with him. The shocking part was not understanding what they were speaking. Obviously they were speaking Czech as I've heard it before but all those years and I never knew he spoke the language. He usually never did say much, usually was a very quiet person....
ahhh Coool poop, nice way to find out, now u can ask him why he didnt teach u, my parents did that with english, when i was a kid they used to speak english arround us when they didnt want us to understand whatever they were saying, now we talk to him and as it turns out HE BARELY SPEAKS, i can just imagine how funny the conversations were...
PS.. Nickys dad was from checoslovakia when it was chechoslovakia

Actually they had a nuclear weapons program but shut it down. For a couple years now they have been considering starting it back up.

Yeah, they shut it down back in '45. They certainly have the know how, materials, and a viable delivery system as it stands, so nukes could be banged out in very short order if necessary. A large portion (40% or so) of Japan's power comes from nuclear reactors.

The Non Proliferation Treaty that Japan's in on depends on US extended deterence, as written into the treaty itself. With North Korea, India, and Pakistan going for it, Japan's probably been thinking about a weapons program since '98.
