okay so its not the one i thought it was, but still makes little sense. He sees people are home (twice), and still decides to break in. Thus highly unlikely that an alarm would deter that kind of criminal (imo). Further they turn on the alarm, apparently the door is locked, but have big windoes with no curtains or anything so whoever wants to can look inside?

By the way, another great trick is to get one of those security signs, even if you don't have an alarm. Makes (some) crooks think you might actually have one and are thus less likely to try and break in as opposed to without (again due to being opportunistic/wanting the easy house)
