Motorcycle Question

I had the same questions 2 years ago and I ended up going with a 2005 Suzuki GS500. It was around $5000 when I threw in all the gear (jacket, helmet, gloves) and I think it was the right choice. It was a great learning bike to teach myself regular maintenance on a bike like how to change the oil/filter, chain maintenance, etc... It had enough torque for me to get comfortable while learning in traffic. Youre in more of an upright position while riding though and I didnt even notice this until I hopped on a GSXR a few days ago and was in true sportbike riding position.

Regardless, its a great cheap bike that will give you all you need to learn the common things about motorcycles and it has some great resale value as well since there are always new riders every season. I'll probably be able to get a little more than half back for the bike after three seasons and about 10k miles put on the bike.

Id say stay away from the 250 Ninja (which it looks like you already are), and Im not sure about your body type but the reason I went with the GS500 over the Ninja 500 is the Ninja felt like a pocket rocket. My damned knees were up to my ears!

Ninja 250 is the best starter bike hands down. Buy a used one and take the MSF training course to get started.

There is no reason to buy a new bike. You will drop it eventually and the depreciation on a new bike is outrageous. If you find motorcycling becomes your new hobby, read very addictive hobby, you will want a new bike within a year or two. Buying used lets you trade up in bikes without hurting your bank account as much as buying new.

www.ninja250.net is the best resource on the net for 250's. Check the FAQ's everything you want to know is there and if not use search. Every noobie question has been asked and answered.

All gear is not the same. I use Scorpion helmets because they are mid-price range and great features. I have used Shoei..more high end and the Scorpions are great for a new rider.

For gear check out Newenough.com, they are out of the Lubbock, Texas area and have the best return policies, prices and service on the net.

I would suggest leather full gauntlet gloves, full leather jacket (perforated for airflow), and some good boots. I would also suggest riding pants whether leather or textile.

I know it gets very very hot in Texas, but sweat wipes off and road rash does not. When you go to the ER with road rash they scrub the asphalt out of your fresh wound and usually they don't provide anesthesia....severe pain.

Not a scare tactic just the facts.

List of things to look at before you buy.

1) Get MSF training first!

2) Check insurance prices..it is expensive if you are young and riding a sport bike.

5) Read, read, and read more about motorcycling. There is a wealth of knowledge on the web, use it.

Buzz kill? Lol, I know bad stuff happens. All the more reason to be safe about what your doing and pretend everyone doesn't see you because most likely they don't. As for my gear I have a pair of Teknic Lightning Gloves, Joe Rocket Ballistic Series 10 Textile Jacket with removable liner, and a Gmax 38x helmet and new clear visor, and a some work boots for now until I can get some decent riding ones.
